Tonight an album saved my life......
I always remember the very first moment I heard this album. I was standing in a kitchen, in a house somewhere in Sligo. My sisters boyfriend had placed his headphones to his very modern walkman,on my ears and pressed play. The first thing I heard was the enveloping notes of "The Sound Of Thunder". I was dumbstruck by it's spirit, which seemed to reach deep inside me. From that moment on I was obsessed which the ownership of this album. I was eleven years old. We were migrating to Australia two days after this epiphany and I was to receive a walkman and an album, in exchange for being renched away from all I knew. No guesses on the cassette I bought!! So for me this album is more than just a bunch of well written pop songs. This album is a place to be safe and an escape from reality, where each track lets you drift inside it's core and become part of something special. Everyday for the first six months of moving to Australia I listened to this album each spare moment on my walkman to help me through the day. For mine this is still their best album musically, followed closely by "Seven and The Ragged Tiger". There is a splash of Blonde here and a dash of Roxy there, but all in all this is a spectacular debut. If you like Electronic music you MUST have this album, even if you never purchase the bands other back catalogue. This was Duran at their must quirky and edgy, just listen to "Friends Of Mine" and you'll agree.

As Good As in 1981
Its wonderful to have the original on CD, their first album was funky and dark great to have it clear and crisp again, my original abit worn out from too many times around the turntable. Still as relevent as it was in 1981

The way they should have remained
For those who haven't liked this band because of the bulk of their work, their first disc was really fairly different. The songs were fabulous, the recording great, and it provided a great mix of ethereal, funky, rock, and danceable genres. Don't be fooled by their later shlock. Buy this and leave well enough alone. By the way, the remastering on this alone is worth the price of the ticket.

Perfect Debut
This album truly defines a very unique and very talented band. In each song of Duran Duran's first LP, you'll find many songs have this unique sound, feel, atmosphere. Duran Duran captures this very abstract yet very surreal type reality with their songs. And I truly mean that, their songs really are beautiful on this album. Some of them are dark like Planet Earth and Nightboat. A couple others carry a very cool and otherworldly sound like Sound of Thunder. Despite the rumors that synth is not very good because it's not natural, you can do really great things with synth. It's never overused and it's prominent where most appropriate. But the point is all the other instruments have a very important part or voice if you will in every song. In my opinion, the album sounds amazing from the first track to the end of Tel Aviv, another great song which through it's sounds and music conveys the beauty and danger of this city. Duran Duran's first album is a must-have for anyone who is even the most casual fan.
