Issued in 2008, LIVE FROM ATLANTIC CITY is the follow-up to actor Danny Aiello's '04 full-length studio debut, I JUST WANTED TO HEAR THE WORDS, a collection of pop/jazz standards. Although this concert reveals that Aiello isn't a powerful vocalist, his laid-back delivery and mellow tone work nicely on many of these classics, particularly on his breezy version of "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter." $19.98 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able to insert ...
| | Michael Buble Crazy Love CD (2009)
Live From Atlantic City
$15.05 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and yearning touch. And just as "Home" worked to showcase Bublé's own writing abilities, here we get the sunshine pop of "Haven't Met You Yet" -- a skippy, jaunty little song that brings to mind a mix of the Carpenters and Chicago. ...

| | Atlas Sound Logos CD (2009)
Live From Atlantic City
$11.64 Bradford Cox was a virtual song machine during the time between Deerhunter's CRYPTOGRAMS and the Atlas Sound's LOGOS, churning out officially released material as well as plenty of songs only available on his blog. Over that span of time, he became a finer and more fluid songwriter, and his music emerged from the experimental fog of his earlier work just enough to give listeners tantalizing glimpses of almost ridiculously catchy songs. LOGOS keeps this push-pull between challenging and charming, yet Cox's second solo album still feels more experimental than Deerhunter, if only because he seems completely unfettered by any kind of rules or concerns about consistency. These songs barely sound like each other, yet they all sound like Cox. LOGOS comes into focus slowly with its first three songs. "The Light That Failed"'s hazy atmospheres slip effortlessly into "An Orchid"'s spectral recall of MICROCASTLE's psych-pop, but it's ...

Live From Atlantic City
$13.14 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward ...

Live From Atlantic City
$12.69 The Instigations, brainchild of composer/multi-instrumentalist Owen Green, has roots that can be traced back to 1979 Los Angeles. In the wake of the punk movement (which some may consider on the down swing circa 1979). Owen, a long time progressive rock enthusiast, got a few of his old friends together to experiment with what could be considered applying a stripped down punk rock damage ethic to progressive rock ideas and vice versa. The result of this incarnation produced several memorable compositions and improvisations including “Aggravated Assault”, a “punk” song written in a whole tone scale. When this was submitted to Frank Zappa’s record company, it was soundly rejected, as well it should have been! These low-grade recordings will likely never see the light of day. As the 1980’s got underway The Instigations ...
