Teslim (TesLEEM) means both 'commit' and 'surrender' in Turkish and features violinist Kaila Flexer and Gari Hegedus on various (mostly plucked) strings including oud, Turkish saz, Greek lauoto and hand drums. This potent duo performs Sephardic, Greek and original music. Here's some background on Kaila and Gari:Kaila Flexer, violin, violaKaila Flexer is a violinist, composer and producer. In addition to performing with Teslim, Flexer also performs with Persian vocalist Hamed Nikpay. She has been at the helm of bands such as Third Ear, Next Village and Kaila Flexer;s Fieldharmonik, ensembles that feature her original material. As a composer, her work reflects her deep respect for folk music. She has performed both nationally internationally with her own ensembles as well as with groups including The Hollis Taylor-Kaila Flexer Duo, The Flexer-Marshall Duo, Club Foot Orchestra and KITKA Women's Vocal Ensemble. She has recorded two CD's of original music for Compass Records (Nashville) to critical acclaim. Gari Hegedus: oud, saz, laouto, baglama, violin, viola, bulgari, divan, cura, lavta, tarhu, frame drum, pennywhistleGari Hegedus plays violin and viola and variety of stringed instruments from Greece and Turkey including lauoto, oud, saz and hand drums. In addition to his work in Teslim, he performs with world music group Stellamara and Persian vocalist Hamed Nikpay. He has studied with oud master Naseer Shamma and has recorded and performed with Ross Daly. Bob Marley generated a staggering number of great records during his brief time in the world's spotlight. Although he cut his first recordings in the early 1960s, it was not until the 1973 release of CATCH A FIRE that Marley and the Wailers became international stars. Eight years later Marley was dead, a victim of cancer. In between, he recorded eight studio albums and several live albums, all of excellent quality.
UPRISING is Marley's final album, and it's also one of his best. BLUES ELEMENT - Overview: Blues Element was formed in Toronto in the spring of 2005 to support the release of "Baby's Got The Blues", a collection of 10 jazzy blues songs written by Jamie Browning & Iain Green. The cd was recorded in October 2004 at Liquid Toronto with producer/engineer Alec Fraser and an all-star line up of guest musicians including Alec, Rod Phillips, Michael Fonfara, Michael Keith, Dave Powell, Bryan Huntley and Kenmi Chank. With this talented crew Jamie & Iain created an album that is being enjoyed in 30 countries on 6 continents, and counting. First released to Canadian campus radio and the CBC in May 2005, several tracks received airplay and appeared on campus jazz & blues charts. Since August 2005 the cd has also been receiving airplay worldwide via internet, campus, cable, commercial, public, satellite radio, and podcasts. Traffic to Blues Element's websites has increased daily, as have sales of digital downloads. In 2006 "It's Not You" was included on the soundtrack of the feature film "Chicknapping", and Jamie & Iain are on the lookout for similar future opportunities. International response to the Blues Element sound has been very positive with many comments along the lines of how refreshing, unusual and different it is. Jamie & Iain call it "happy blues"; a fun, sexy and danceable mix of original compositions along with (for both fun and filler in the live show) select mid 20th century R&B, funk, jazz and blues favourites. Artists covered include Ruth Brown, James Brown, Dinah Washington, Etta James, Little Wille John, and Louis Jordan. Since their 1st CD release party in Toronto in June 2005 Blues Element has been working on their live delivery playing clubs and private parties mostly as a 4 piece. The trick was finding and keeping players for the live band that are as hot as those that joined them in the recording studios, but after some trial & error and down time the right combination of people has finally been found, including an occasional guest keyboard player.
