| | Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music, Vols. 1-2 CD (1987)
De Cuba Y De Panama music CDs
$13.59 Originally released on Swallow (6011) in 1965 and Swallow (6019) in 1974. Includes French and English translations.
If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning.
Theirs is an entirely acoustic sound, based on the jangling rhythm of the guitar, the sprightly tinkling of the triangle, and two wailing fiddles, alternately melancholy and joyous. Dewey ...

| | Ravi Shankar West Meets East: The Historic Shankar/Menuhin Sessions CD (1967)
De Cuba Y De Panama album
$8.29 That a Western violinist should choose to pair with the illustrious Ravi Shankar is not in itself surprising. The violin was fully absorbed (and tuned much lower) by the Indian classical music establishment by the 19th century, and more recently has produced performers such as Dr. L. Subramaniam, Lalgudi Jayaraman, and the highly experimental L. Shankar. However, aside from being a highly accomplished set of recordings, the WEST MEETS EAST series--three Menuhin-Shankar collaborations that were later distilled into this one--elevated ...

De Cuba Y De Panama songs
$14.99 The traditional music of Spain is a wild mishmash of influences from all over Europe and Africa -- in some places you'll hear lots of keening North African sounds, in others you'll hear rollicking Celtic jigs and reels. Madrid-based La Musgaña's sound blends all of them together into a joyful welter of exotic melodies and rhythms, and this compilation celebrates their 20th anniversary with a fine collection of tracks taken from their many albums and live performances. The group's twin strengths lie in its instrumental virtuosity and in the flamboyant energy of its arrangements: the clearly audible Arabisms that wind through the song "Truvisqueira," the interplay between the accordion, hurdy-gurdy, and funk bass on "Pasodoble Portugués," the klezmer-ish clarinet that keens its vinegary way through "Charro Salmantino a Trio," the riotous 7/8 meter on "Siete per Ocho." Their weakness, which isn't disastrous, is a certain sameyness of tone, a pervasively thin and reedy sound that can get a bit tiresome, particularly when the local version ...
