Comp. Live Recordings album
$14.79 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and the considered, varied arrangements of Jay Graydon and Jarreau himself keep the proceedings interesting.
Arrangers: Chris Walker; Clare Fischer; Brent Fisher; Joe Turano; David Witham; Jay Graydon; Jorge Calandrelli; Al Jarreau; Larry Williams.
Personnel: Al Jarreau (vocals, background vocals); Chris Walker (vocals, bass instrument, bass guitar, background vocals); Take 6 (vocals); Ross Bolton (guitar); Michael ...
| | Essential Tony Bennett CDs (2002) Limited Edition; Remastered
Comp. Live Recordings CD music
$15.89 It's almost shocking to realize that before this collection's release, the career of musical legend Tony Bennett had been extensively anthologized only in box-set format and never by a career-spanning two-disc compilation. Upon inspection, it seems like the ultimate no-brainer--pick some of the mainly highlights from this vocal sensation's 50-year career, put them in chronological order, and let the magic happen.
Happen it does, as we're treated to gems from every phase of Bennett's oeuvre. Casual listeners may be surprised to learn that the '50s found Tony successfully reinventing Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" alongside more customary fare such as signature song "Rags to Riches." No one will be shocked at the very necessary inclusion of the '60s comeback smash "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," but those who think of Bennett as an artifact belonging only to Sinatra's time will be educated by the subsequent material included here. From the sinuously jazzy "Steppin' Out with My Baby" to a moving take on the Elllington evergreen "Mood Indigo" and an album-closing duet with K.D. Lang, the more contemporary material here makes just as convincing a case as the earlier work for Bennett as THE living master of the Great American Songbook.
Recorded between 1951 & 2001.

| | Beyond The Missouri Sky: Short Stories By Charlie Haden & Pat Metheny CD (1997)
Comp. Live Recordings songs
$15.35 BEYOND THE MISSOURI SKY won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group.
Metheny and Haden have a lot in common. They're two of the most respected musicians at the vanguard of contemporary jazz, and they've worked together in Metheny's own band as well as with people like Ornette Coleman, Abbey Lincoln and Michael Brecker. They're both innovators who've blazed new trails on their respective axes. They're also both from small towns in Missouri, which is the underlying theme of this collaboration. Essentially an acoustic duet album, MISSOURI SKY finds these old friends joining together to paint an aural landscape that evokes the wide open spaces and heartland ...

| | Yanni In My Time CD (1993)
Comp. Live Recordings CD music
$10.15 After his wildly successful DARE TO DREAM album, the iconic New Age performer Yanni decided to rein in the dense, propulsive, synthesizer-heavy element of his music, opting for a more intimate, piano-led sound on 1993's IN MY TIME. The stylistic change certainly didn't hurt the Greek superstar's popularity; if anything, it increased his already-high profile, leading to the multi-platinum concert performance LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS.
IN MY TIME opens with the spare, delicate "In the Morning Light," establishing a beautifully hushed tone, with gentle piano lines gliding over light, subtle keyboard backing. "The End of August" takes on a fittingly warm, late-summer mood that's enhanced by the emotive violin playing of Endre Granat, while "Only a Memory" uses sensitive piano/keyboard ...

Comp. Live Recordings songs
$13.49 While clarinetist/soprano saxophonists Kenny Davern and Bob Wilber are of the generation that produced the first wave of bebop and hard bop players, both favor earlier jazz modes of small-group swing and New Orleans-inspired hot jazz. From 1972 to 1979, Davern and Wilbur co-led Soprano Summit, a hard-swinging quintet dedicated to pre-bop styles. Recorded live in 1975 and backed by simpatico fellow travelers Marty Grosz (acoustic guitar) and George Duvivier (bass) plus inspired guest Connie Kay (drummer for the MJQ), this Summit combo goes to town on New Orleans standards and Jelly Roll Morton gems. To fill out this double-disc set, there are fine live tracks by other small groups featuring Davern and Wilber (along with trombonist ...
