Mere months after Trent Reznor unveiled the 2008 instrumental collection GHOSTS I-IV online without warning, the Nine Inch Nails frontman issued another independent album out of the blue--a completely free studio album entitled THE SLIP. While not a radical departure from the fuzzed-out dystopia of YEAR ZERO, this 10-track outing does hark back to Reznor's earlier work (most notably THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL), as on the pounding "Discipline," which is tempered by a chiming keyboard melody, and the spare, piano-driven piece "Light in the Sky," a song that showcases the artist's brooding persona. Pithy and immediate, THE SLIP functions as a refreshing counterpoint to NIN's cumbersome 1999 double-disc outing, THE FRAGILE, and easily ranks as one of Trent Reznor's most satisfying endeavors.
This set includes the band's highly acclaimed new CD with 10 new tracks performed by Trent Reznor with Josh Freese, Robin Finck, and Alessandro Cortini. The DVD includes live tracks from The Slip rehearsals, plus 24-page booklet, and exclusive sticker pack.

Rolling Stone (p.94) - Ranked #37 in Rolling Stone's 50 Best Albums Of 2008 -- "[F]illed with granite funk and stark-naked confessions." Spin (p.111) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "THE SLIP is primo death funk with Reznor seething seductively about skies fading to black over grinding soundscapes that perfectly split the difference between computer-music clarity and live-band grit." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[C]omprised of 10 tracks that veer between the atmospheric and the downright funky, the discordant to the sublimely melodic." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.60) - Ranked #18 in Kerrang's Best Albums Of The Year 2008 -- "Continually disturbing, off-kilter, slightly creepy genius, but genius nonetheless." Blender (Magazine) (p.74) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his is industrial-strength Trent -- lithe, throbbing shame-disco, torrid guitar obliteration...and one revitalized 43-year-old auteur..." Nine Inch Nails Slip Songs Slip Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Trent Reznor Gave Us the Slip! I believe "The Slip" is a strong NIN release. It was released in early May for free on NIN's website. However, I understand that the released version has a DVD included, meaning if you missed the free download, you get bonus stuff for paying! Anyway, "The Slip" starts off with an ambient opening, "999,999." After that concludes, "1,000,000" begins. This is one of my favorite NIN tracks recently, and I believe it is the best on the album. Next is the heavy "Letting You" and the strong, With Teeth-esque "Discipline." From there, the beat-driven "Echoplex" and another heavy hitter "Head Down" play. Next is the fantastic "Lights in the Sky," a "Great Below" or "Something I Can Never Have"-like piano ballad. Next are two instrumental tracks, "Corona Radiata" and "The Four of Us Are Dying." They seem like they were taken right out of Ghosts I-IV. "Demon Seed" ends the album on a dark, powerful note.
All in all, this is a surprising NIN release. Despite its short length, Trent really explores the sound from each of his past albums. I hope every NIN fan (and non-NIN fan) enjoys this release as much as I did! Submitted by R4V1$H (Harrisburg, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 5 of 8 found this helpful.
Good stuff I think Reznor is now one of that musicians that just want to enjoy with music and amuse himself and his followers; now an artist and not a star-for-teens: is what this album is all about Submitted by tabaco.ricochet (Santiago, Chile) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Captain Bore Nevermind the ridiculous attempts to break down Trent Reznor's music. If you are a "true" fan of NIN then this album will deliver all that you could ever ask for. Each track gives new light into the direction of this epic frontman. Constantly changing face when it comes to recording music, Trent has always stuck to his roots and never strayed away from what he does best; Making music that has meaning. We could make remarks about this and that but in the end all that really matters is the music. Check NIN out on their new tour. You will not be dissapointed. Can't Beat Free Don't we all love free stuff? For this reason alone "The Slip" by Nine Inch Nails gets five stars. The album was available for digital download on Nine Inch Nail's official website in early May.
“This one’s on me,” Nine Inch Nails guru Trent Reznor stated on the site.
Recently, (July 22, 2008 to be exact) the physical album was released accomodating anti-ipod fans who like to sit and stare at album covers for hours.
After escaping "The Man" (aka Interscope Records) frontman Trent Reznor has been busy releasing 2 albums in 2008. His album "Ghosts I–IV" was released just 2 months prior to "The Slip" in March. According to Reznor "The Slip" was recorded in only three weeks.
Reviews of the album have ranged from pure genius to a bore. My first listen had me leaning more towards boredom. We've all heard Reznor's "sound" before, typically consisting of a dark bass, light drum machine and quirky sounds. Could you even tell the difference if someone switched out "The Slip" with another one of his latest albums (especially Ghosts I-IV)?
But after a few listens I found a special creativity and dark beauty hiding beneath that familiar sound. There are a few catchy songs that are constructed more solid than some of Reznor's latest creations, specifically "Discipline" and "Echoplex." My favorite are the haunting instrumentals "Corona Radiata" and "The Four of Us are Dying."
I imagine this ablum will do little for Reznor's commercial appeal. It is not radio friendly. But I never sensed that Nine Inch Nails strove for commerical appeal. Reznor is a true artist and the Captain looks forward to his creations free from the limits of a record label.
