Northern Cree Singers is a group from Canada that specializes in traditional Native American music, particularly of the frantic drum-and-chant-based powwow type. RED ROCK, a live performance, proves how electrifying the Northern Cree singers can be. STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one certified classic in "Buffalo Soldier." The record features some very tasty guitar, good vocal performances and the always rock-steady rhythm section of the Barrett brothers. While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be the next purchase for anyone who already owns all of the official Marley albums. While the disc is perhaps a little light on variety, it's still a Bob Marley album and thus as good as the best work of many other artists. Overall, CONFRONTATION is great mellow summertime listening and a worthy addition to any reggae collection.
