Lovers of jazz fusion and devotees of the possibilities of the electric bass have reason to thank the heavens for the arrival of THUNDER. A collaboration between three of the genre's reigning heavyweights-Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, and Victor Wooten-THUNDER offers up a cornucopia of low-end sonic playfulness and mastery. With tracks that range from orchestral (opener "Maestros de Las Frencuencias Bajas) to moody, spaghetti-western film music ("Los Tres Hermanos"), the album mixes jazz, funk, ambient, light jazz, and classical elements. Clarke, Miller, and Wooten weave their instruments around each other, creating plenty of varied interplay, and making this enjoyable set a bass-lover's dream.
S.M.V.: Marcus Miller (bass clarinet, synthesizer, electric bass); Stanley Clarke (acoustic bass, electric bass); Victor Wooten (electric bass).
Down Beat (p.80) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]hese 13 tracks showcase killer chops and unique arrangements....The title track is a metal-edged funk stomper..." JazzTimes (pp.94-95) - "[T]he three bassists are never less than stunning in their mastery of the four-string....Miller's production is often sparse, the better to showcase the stars..." Paste (magazine) (p.65) - "Their debut, THUNDER, proves playful: With vocals relegated to the background, the bass takes the melody, the rhythm, the low end, the high end and all the solos, creating an admirably diverse array of sounds and styles." Thunder Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) If you like bass.... . . .. you'll love this! Following a visit to Montreux this year and a personal recommendation from Marcus Miller himself to check this album out I bought a copy and have not been disappointed. 3 of the world's top bass players together gives an incrediable and quite unique sound. Thouroughly recommended for those who like a contemporary jazz/funk sound and for fans of the 3 artists involved but definately not for those who are not into their bass!;o)

Some serious funky jamming This cd surprised me,they are all great musicians in their own way, but at times during their serious jamming the music got too busy. But, in all if you like their brand of funk add it to your collection because it will be a collectors item in the future. Thunder album
$15.05 Anyone who knows anything about Victor Wooten knows that he's one of those rare souls: he gains a rep for playing the bass. Soul Circus, however, isn't just an extravaganza for bass players. Wooten, as it turns out, is also a heck of a writer and, as the listener will learn on the first track, a fine singer. The unusual first track, "Victa," is a funky, soulful hymn in praise of -- who else -- Wooten himself, while "Bass Tribute" offers accolades to those who've come before him. If the subject matter sounds a bit strange, the confident delivery, understated humor, and fine songwriting make it all work. Soul Circus' production is a nice merger of keyboards, drums, lots of bass, and multiple voices. While this combination and Wooten's production does provide a blueprint sound for the album, it's never predictable. "Back to India," for example, combines soul and sitar for an ...

| | Victor Wooten Palmystery CD (2008)
Thunder songs
$12.59 As the virtuoso bass man for Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten has become a hero to four- (and five-) stringers everywhere. On his own, he creates a sound that largely rejects the rootsier side of Fleck's sound, embracing instead the funk and jazz-fusion flavors that have already been flowing through him for many years. Wooten's been making solo albums since the mid-'90s, but PALMYSTERY is one of his most wide-ranging efforts yet, incorporating soul/R&B, gospel, bluesy guitar licks (courtesy of Keb' Mo'), and of course the death-defying thumb acrobatics for which the world-class bassist is best known
