| | Emmylou Harris Last Date CD Emmylou Harris Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Recorded live on tour in California in 1982. Previously released on Warner Brothers (9237404). Includes liner notes by Brian Mansfield.
Digitally remastered by Brian Ahern & Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab, Hollywood, California).
For LAST DATE, recorded in a series of California honky-tonks during 1982, Emmylou Harris set out specifically to cast her Hot Band as one of the world's great country outfits. Harris wanted to make an all-covers live album that would capture the spirit of honky-tonk as she saw it, and here she sings a variety of endearing country tunes revolving, not surprisingly, around love.
Among the best are Don Everly's ballad, "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)," Carl Perkins' bluegrass number, "Restless," Bruce Springsteen's novelistic "Racing in the Street," and Neil Young's country rocker/car anthem, "Long May You Run." LAST DATE expresses Harris's vision of what country music should sound like; the public responded well to this concept. LAST DATE stayed on the Billboard charts for thirty-two weeks in 1982, peaking at number nine.

CMJ (5/22/00, p.28) - "...Documents the powerhouse Harris was in concert early in her solo career. Backed by her famous Hot Band, she tears through stirring renditions [of songs]...while retaining the glory of the originals." No Depression (7-8/00, pp.96-7) - "...Consistent throughout....[It] features the least-known incarnation of Harris' Hot Band...and captures a series of live dates in California clubs....Her first live album, it produced several hits..." Last Date album
$11.69 The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. If the song selection itself isn't surprising--including the usual fare like "What Child is This," "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Silent Night"--the arrangements are. A large orchestra, featuring brass, strings, reeds, percussion, and two different choirs, give these renditions a full, sweeping flavor reminiscent of the big bands of the 1940s and `50s. The album also includes an original single, "A Baby Changes Everything," which features one of Hill's most compelling performances.

| | Christmas With The New Christy Minstrels: Complete! CD (2001)
Last Date songs
$15.25 Christmas With the New Christy Minstrels: Complete! offers not one, but two albums by the group of the same name. Interestingly, because of a number of personnel changes, none of the members present for Merry Christmas! in 1963 remained with the group in 1966 when Christmas With the Christies was recorded. While the group has been eclipsed by Peter, Paul, and Mary over time, the New Christy Minstrels' star shone as bright as any folk group in the mid-'60s. The group carved out a unique choral sound, achieved with the help of nine members. When the Christies combined complex arrangements with several talented lead singers on songs like "Beautiful City" and "Tell It on the Mountain," they created a rich tapestry of sound. With nine singers, only the most ardent fans know that the group was the brainchild of Randy Sparks, or that Nick Woods and Art Podell handled the arrangements on the early albums. The bottom line to most fans was how good the group sounded on songs like "The Shepherd Boy" and "Parson Brown." In fact, quite a few people consider Merry Christmas! to be the group's best album and have been listening to scratchy copies of the LP for over 25 Christmases. If this album shines less brightly, it has something to do with the more formalized arrangements ...
| | Burl Ives Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer CD (1995)
Last Date album
$4.99 The Rankin/Bass animagic film Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer first appeared on December 6, 1964. Since then, it has become the longest-running of all holiday TV specials (with, we hope, no end in sight). It's fitting that the grandfather of all Christmas specials features Burl Ives, still remembered warmly by millions as the voice behind the film's narrator, Sam the Snowman. Although this soundtrack bears his name, Ives appears only on a handful of songs: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "A Holly Jolly Christmas," and "Silver and Gold." The remaining vocals are handled by various cast members: "Jingle Jingle Jingle" features Stan Francis as Santa, "We're a Couple of Misfits" is sung by Billie Mae Richards (the voice of Rudolph) and Paul Soles (the voice of Hermie), "There's Always Tomorrow" is immortalized by Janet Orenstein (as Clarice), and a chorus shares "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year." The real musical genius behind the movie is Johnny Marks, a songwriter who had earlier written the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" as well as holiday favorites like "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (which is featured in a medley here). His songs, in the hands of musical director Maury Laws, simply sparkle with Christmas magic. ...
| | Neko Case Middle Cyclone CD (2009)
Last Date CD music
$14.75 Indie/alt-country songwriter-goddess Neko Case is nothing if not a chameleon, capable of wrapping herself around soulful twang, snotty 'tude, or bouyant teen energy. But if there's a thread running through her work, it's her undeniable magnetism as a poet. And on CYCLONE, by fully embracing the theme of love for the first time in her career, she transforms herself into an almost mystically insightful weaver of romantic imagery. On "Polar Nettles" in particular, Case effortlessly unravels the tale of a woman so powerful that she acts as a centrifuge spinning out the sun's rays. Guests range from M. Ward to her co-members from the New Pornographers, but like Dolly Parton during her early-'70s heyday, there is no mistaking who the moment belongs to. Whether it's the title track's ...

$18.55 Despite the name In Elvis Garage is neither about Elvis Presley nor about garage rock. However, as the name suggests, there is an American connection. Their music is very much indebted to American pop acts like The Shins and The New Pornographers. The band started as a spin-off to Swedish punk rock outfit Myron´s Girlfriend as a way for singer/guitarist Andreas Körsell to explore his love for the pure pop song with dazzling melodies and vocal harmonies. The side project soon became the main project. A steady line-up was formed with brother Pär ...
