Full DescriptionLAST DATE, recorded in a series of California honky-tonks during 1982, Emmylou Harris set out specifically to cast her Hot Band as one of the world's great country outfits. Harris wanted to make an all-covers live album that would capture the spirit of honky-tonk as she saw it, and here she sings a variety of endearing country tunes revolving, not surprisingly, around love.
Among the best are Don Everly's ballad, "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)," Carl Perkins' bluegrass number, "Restless," Bruce Springsteen's novelistic "Racing in the Street," and Neil Young's country rocker/car anthem, "Long May You Run." LAST DATE expresses Harris's vision of what country music should sound like; the public responded well to this concept. LAST DATE stayed on the Billboard charts for thirty-two weeks in 1982, peaking at number nine.

CMJ (5/22/00, p.28) - "...Documents the powerhouse Harris was in concert early in her solo career. Backed by her famous Hot Band, she tears through stirring renditions [of songs]...while retaining the glory of the originals." Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so.
Here, Ferry's lounge lizard affectations are writ large; the lyrical pose is all bruised romantic fatalism (say hello, "Slave to Love"), and the music fits it like a glove. The album's soundscapes are lush and echo-laden, and nearly every track has a discreet disco pulse; "Valentine," the one exception, is mid-tempo reggae. Overlaid with skittish percussion and guitars, BOYS AND GIRLS is the aural equivalent of a white dinner jacket and a half-empty bottle of champagne.

Last Date CD music
$14.45 The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. If the song selection itself isn't surprising--including the usual fare like "What Child is This," "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Silent Night"--the arrangements are. A large orchestra, featuring brass, strings, reeds, percussion, and two different choirs, give these renditions a full, sweeping flavor reminiscent of the big bands of the 1940s and `50s. The album also includes an original single, "A Baby Changes Everything," which features one of Hill's most compelling performances.
Arrangers: Dann Huff; Faith Hill; David Campbell; Byron Gallimore.
Personnel: London Oratory School Schola, Metro Voices (vocals); Dann Huff, Jerry McPherson, Tom Bukovac (guitar); Pete Hutlinger, Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar); David Schnaufer (dulcimer); Jonathan Yudkin (celtic harp, fiddle, viola, cello); Michael Compton (mandolin); Conni Ellisor, Karen Winkelmann, Catherine Umstead, Gerald Greer, Denise ...
