For LAST DATE, recorded in a series of California honky-tonks during 1982, Emmylou Harris set out specifically to cast her Hot Band as one of the world's great country outfits. Harris wanted to make an all-covers live album that would capture the spirit of honky-tonk as she saw it, and here she sings a variety of endearing country tunes revolving, not surprisingly, around love.
Among the best are Don Everly's ballad, "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)," Carl Perkins' bluegrass number, "Restless," Bruce Springsteen's novelistic "Racing in the Street," and Neil Young's country rocker/car anthem, "Long May You Run." LAST DATE expresses Harris's vision of what country music should sound like; the public responded well to this concept. LAST DATE stayed on the Billboard charts for thirty-two weeks in 1982, peaking at number nine.

CMJ (5/22/00, p.28) - "...Documents the powerhouse Harris was in concert early in her solo career. Backed by her famous Hot Band, she tears through stirring renditions [of songs]...while retaining the glory of the originals." No Depression (7-8/00, pp.96-7) - "...Consistent throughout....[It] features the least-known incarnation of Harris' Hot Band...and captures a series of live dates in California clubs....Her first live album, it produced several hits..." $15.95 In the past, if you wanted a Johnny Cash compilation, you were basically confined by licensing issues, as Cash's seminal Sun recordings weren't generally available in the same place as his more eclectic Columbia output. THE ESSENTIAL JOHNNY CASH solves that problem, tying together the various eras of Cash's career on a generous 35-track, two-disc set. Accordingly, this anthology is damn near definitive. From the raw, sparse rockabilly flavor of "Hey Porter" and "Get Rhythm" to the gospel roots of "Where You There (When They Crucified My Lord," the first disc moves neatly through Cash's early career.
Disc two documents Cash's expansion into ever more varied stylistic avenues. Countrified covers of Bob Dylan ("It Ain't Me Babe") and Tim Hardin ("If I Were a Carpenter") exemplify his fascination with folk-rock. The socially conscious "Man in Black" and the patriotic "Ragged Old Flag" perfectly display the ostensibly conflicting sides of this complex artist's sensibilities. Album-closer ...

$12.64 As a songwriter, Chip Taylor has never seemed to be able to rest on his considerable laurels. Since his return to music in 1996, he's made a series of roots music records, including those with Carrie Rodriguez and Kendel Carson, that have all been critically acclaimed. YONKERS, NY, a double-disc set, may be his most ambitious album to date. Nearing 70, Taylor writes a lot about the past here as he looks back on his life and times in that little suburb just north of the Bronx where he and his brothers -- actor Jon Voight and geologist Barry Voight -- grew up, and reveals some family secrets along the way. The band includes guitarist John Platania; Greg Leisz on pedal steel, mandolin, and dobro; bassist Tony Mercadante; pianist and accordionist Seth Farber; Carson on fiddle; and drummer Tony Leone -- and the music is drenched in classic Americana: folk, country, and rockabilly. On the 11-track set, Taylor recounts his adventures musically and, in ...

The very first thing the writer did was to find players he could exchange ideas with and develop a unique sound that had not been done before. writing about things that many bands don't care to write about, they attack of all things the abortion issues, child abuse, spousal abuse and suicide. the blues is a big part of the life of this music as all real writers have had it at some time or another, else "you just aint no writer with soul till you had em ". the sound of this band is no less than terrific and the messages embodied really cut to the chase and tell it like it is. $18.55 Despite the name In Elvis Garage is neither about Elvis Presley nor about garage rock. However, as the name suggests, there is an American connection. Their music is very much indebted to American pop acts like The Shins and The New Pornographers. The band started as a spin-off to Swedish punk rock outfit Myron´s Girlfriend as a way for singer/guitarist Andreas Körsell to explore his love for the pure pop song with dazzling melodies and vocal harmonies. The side project soon became the main project. A steady line-up was formed with brother Pär Körsell on bass and Olof Jernryd on drums. After playing several live shows their early recordings got good reviews alongside bands like Peter Bjorn and John and Ronderlin. However the brothers’ constant fighting put a strain on the band and lead to an involuntary break. After getting a deal ...
