In First Circle, the Pat Metheny Group settled into a lineup that lasted for quite a while -- with Metheny, keyboardist Lyle Mays, bassist Steve Rodby, and new drummer Paul Wertico forming the core quartet. The ever-restless Metheny also mixes up the music, not quite leaving the Brazilian glide behind but coming up with some fascinating permutations always affixed with his personal stamp. "Forward March," the album opener, is a bizarre parody full of detuned instruments and half-cocked trumpet from Mays; one wonders if this was directed at a few silly skirmishes of the day (Grenada? the Falklands?). "The First Circle" has Brazilian elements, but now in the service of a grander architectural context, while nothing could be simpler and yet more sophisticated than the delicate ballad "If I Could." "End of the Game" might be the best track on the record, equipped with a beautiful pop-flavored set of tunes and harmonies, with a rock beat fused to the floating ambience of South America as personified by the new Argentine percussionist/vocalist Pedro Aznar. "Praise," the closer, is an out-and-out rock tune, an affirmative flip side of "Forward March" and the last of a series of delightful surprises. ~ Richard S. Ginell

First Circle music CDs
$15.35 Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly ...

First Circle album
$16.45 Tim Lane was born Timmothy Lane Cromer on June 28, 1969 in Oconee, South Carolina. He was born to working class parents, George and Minnie Cromer. George Cromer spent most of his life working in a steel plant. Tim would grow up to follow in his father’s footsteps by becoming employed at the same steel plant in 1995, in which they worked the same shift for many years. They saw each other daily. George passed away on June 9, 2000, which made it very difficult for Tim to return to work. Tim endured the pain and returned to work but felt an emptiness at the plant for several years after. With the passing of his father Tim decided to quit the steel plant to pursue a more flexible job, which would allow more time for him to chase his musical aspirations. Tim currently resides in Greenville, South Carolina; however, it is Westminster South Carolina that he calls home. It is in this small town of Upstate South Carolina where Tim realized his interest in music. He and his two sisters, Lisa and Lynn, would sing with their mother in church on Sundays. In fact, Tim would go on to sing in both the youth and adult choir at First Baptist Church of Westminster. Tim graduated from West Oak High School in Westminster and worked at several local jobs. In May of 1992 he went on ...

First Circle music CDs
$16.35 With two electric guitars, electric bass and drums, Jerry Granelli's V16 project might resemble a rock band more than your standard jazz band, but don't be fooled: this is a jazz band all the way. Actually, the way they operate, it's almost more of a jazz organism. Much like Henry Threadgill's Zooid or Very Very Circus (and Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler before that), this project is dedicated to group improvisation. Which is not to say it's free jazz: it's not. There are strong melodies to almost every tune, but it's never a situation where they play a head and trade solos. The melodies are a launching point for a group sound that ebbs and flows, touching back on the melodies at times but never slavishly bound to them. Christian Kögel and David Tronzo's rapport is incredible. There are times where it seems one guitar player will complete the other's thought. There are times where suddenly a unison-played melody appears almost out of nowhere only to resolve into two or three separate tangents. The way the players crawl inside the tunes and work as one is really amazing. It can be difficult to tell who is doing what (besides the drums, of course). Kögel and Tronzo play with both restraint and abandon (check out Tronzo's prepared guitar work on the DVD portion) but there are never any flashy solos. Members of the band may drop out for fairly lengthy stretches. "Udon Waltz" is just a duet between J. Anthony Granelli and Christian Kögel. The cover of "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?" is performed as a drum solo! But even in the other tunes, it isn't uncommon for players to drop out ...
