One of the most underrated guitarists in the current metal climate, Nevermore's Jeff Loomis branches out with a shredfest of a solo album, ZERO ORDER PHASE. Influenced by Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen, the wholly instrumental PHASE traverses three primary genres: Nevermore's signature gothic doom metal, neo-classical/progressive post-rock, and a blistering Testament meets At The Gates death-like thrash. Produced by Neil Kernon (Queensryche) and featuring performances by Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower), Pat O'Brien (Cannibal Corpse), Michael Manring (Michael Hedges), and former Nevermore drummer Mark Arrington, Loomis's solo debut was more than three years in the making.

The fourth in a list of solid releases from Nevermore, Dead Heart in a Dead World is possibly the group's most accomplished recording. For the first time, Jeff Loomis handles all the guitar duties himself, giving the disc a musical continuity that was sometimes lacking on prior efforts. Nevermore co-founder Warrel Dane (vocals), Jim Sheppard (bass), and Van Williams (drums) join Loomis on this 2000 Century Media offering. All four members demonstrate great command of their instruments, but Loomis' guitar playing stands out. Nevermore's sixth album arrives bearing few surprises -- which, for a band less accomplished or too comfortable in their niche, would generally be seen as a negative attribute. Not here, as Seattle's finest mid-'00s heavy metal outfit (sorry Queensr˙che!) continue to set the bar for purist-leaning metal-heads on this side of the pond. As always, and not to take anything away from their cohorts (particularly drummer extraordinaire Van Williams), the soaring vocals of Warrel Dane and lead guitar heroics of Jeff Loomis act as twin beacons shining out from the band's gloriously metallic bulk. Furthermore, it's arguable if Dane (now almost completely divorced from his once too strident upper registers) has ever sounded quite this aggressive on any of Nevermore's earlier albums (witness his coarse roars on opener "Born (The Retribution of Spiritual Sickness)").
