| | Blues Anatomy Rediscovering Lonnie Johnson Vinyl LP Record Blues Anatomy Discography of CDs
While hardly well known (except among history-minded music fanatics), Lonnie Johnson remains an important figure in the development of the guitar in jazz, blues, and popular music. In the 1920s and `30s, Johnson played with Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, and giants B.B. King and Bob Dylan acknowledge him as a major influence. The band Blues Anatomy, featuring ace guitarist Jef Lee Johnson and special guest Geoff Muldaur, perform a dozen of Johnson's songs here. Jef Lee Johnson echoes the technique of the elder Johnson (no relation, incidentally) while deftly morphing between New Orleans and swing jazz, blues, and even early R&B styles. While REDISCOVERING isn't exactly an album for purists (Lonnie Johnson wasn't one himself), for students and fans of great guitar playing, it's a party waiting to happen.Down Beat (p.87) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Jef Lee Johnson raises the bar consistently with his superlative acoustic playing on jazz instrumentals like 'Swing Out Rhythm' and '6/88 Glide.'" Dirty Linen (p.78) - "The renowned Philly-based Blues Anatomy re-casts 11 of Lonnie Johnso's most distinguished tracks...and updates them for 2008 with a blues-rock edge." Living Blues (p.48) - "Davis is essentially a crooner, yet he does not try to copy Johnson as he applies his warm tenor voice to the variety of styles -- blues, jazz, and pop -- at which the subject of this magnificent salute so excelled." Rediscovering Lonnie Johnson CD music
$17.19 Recorded between 1970 and 1980. Includes liner notes by John McDermott.
Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Music Group Studios).
Prior to Eric Clapton's pop- and MTV-driven mid-'80s work, he spent the '70s and early '80s playing languid, singer-songwriter soft rock evocative of J.J. Cale and Don Edwards. But Clapton always kept one foot in the blues of his youth. BLUES brings this material together in one place and throughout, Slowhand taps into an inner spirituality that does these blues standards well.
The first disc contains studio recordings that include tributes to many influences including Elmore James ("The Sky Is Crying") and Willie Dixon ("Meet Me [Down At the Bottom]"). Most impressive is a stripped-down version of Little Walter's "Mean Old World," in which Clapton and Duane Allman duet using National steel and slide ...

| | John Lee Hooker Healer Vinyl LP (1989)
Rediscovering Lonnie Johnson music CDs
$36.15 When popular culture embraced John Lee, purists turned up their noses. They should have been pleased that the world's greatest living Delta bluesman was going to make some money before he turned up his toes. Teaming up with Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Canned Heat (not for the first time) and others, lent Hooker's blues a contemporary gloss. It took the album to the upper reaches of the album charts around the world, brought him a number of Grammy awards and a new career in advertising. The blues is not only a healer, it drinks brandy and wears jeans. The Santana guitar solo on the title track is breathtaking and Hooker is the coolest senior citizen in the world.
This album was a mainstream breakthrough for John Lee Hooker and was one of his first releases to feature a wide array of guest stars, including Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, Johnnie Johnson, Los Lobos and Carlos Santana. This 180 gram vinyl replaces CLS
