Earthquake at the Avalon features guitar legend Larry Coyell in an special and unique concert, recorded at The Avalon, CA in October 2005. Superbly backed by The Souls Dirge Band (Bernard "Pretty" Burdie - Drums, John Hart - Bass, Winston Byrd - Trumpets, his son Julien Coryell - Guitar/Keyboards and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos) this CD (also released on DVD INAK 6180 DVD), captures Coryell's progressive style of play, which primarily fused the ideas of rock and jazz into one intense and funky entity.
Though he's not (usually) given quite enough credit, guitarist Larry Coryell's place in jazz history is crucial. Before Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Weather Report, Coryell pioneered jazz-rock fusion, both on his own and as a member of Gary Burton's band. He' still pushing at boundaries--with a combo of old and new faces (master drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, son Julien Coryell, David Hidalgo from Los Lobos), Coryell soars through a live set that juggles and integrates elements of fusion, bebop, blues, funk, and rock. Recommended for guitar fanatics in general and Coryell fans in particular.
Personnel: Larry Coryell (vocals, guitar); Julian Coryell (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Winston Byrd (trumpet); John Hart (bass instrument, bass guitar); Bernard "Pretty" Purdie (drums).
