Monkee's Uncle CD (2005)
Altamont music CDs Picture a more "stoner rock"-based version of the Melvins, and you wouldn't be too far off from Altamont. After all, longtime Melvins drummer Dale Crover is the leader of Altamont, as he "pulls a Dave Grohl" and puts down the drums sticks in favor of vocal and guitar duties. Unlike the first releases from the group (which also includes bassist Dan Southwick and drummer Joe Osbourne), 2005's The Monkee's Uncle sees the trio expand to include an additional percussionist and an organ player. Although they follow much more traditional song structures than the Melvins, both groups put the importance of the almighty guitar riff first -- albeit in a more garage rock style. Highlights include the barnstorming album opener, "Frank Bank," the surprisingly up-tempo ditty "El Stupido," and the riff monster "The Bloodening." Crover has obviously learned well from witnessing the Melvins' Buzz Osborne torture his Les Paul after all these years. ~ Greg Prato

Altamont: Dale Crover (vocals, various instruments); Dan Southwick (guitar, bass instrument, drums); Joey Osborne, Sasha Popovich (drums); Tosh Kasai.

Altamont/Acid King CD (1997)
Altamont discography Pairing the then-husband-and-wife team of Lori S and Dale Crover and their respective bands, Acid King and Altamont, this disc showcases two peculiar, interesting Melvins spin-offs. Dale, of course, is Melvins' thunderous drummer, while Lori S -- it is rumored -- served as a fill-in bass player from time to time. Both bands share a rhythm section but differ dramatically as a whole. Acid King is a cough-syrupy, fuzzed-out paean to retro stoner rock, plodding heavily through two tracks while showcasing Lori S' Joan Jett-as-a-satanic-witch vocals. On Dale's side, Altamont is a more ...

Our Darling CD (2001)
Altamont songs A little less Allman Brothers/Skynyrd than before, Altamont enters a new millennium with Our Darling, showing that 2001 can still be a place where the rock is loud, brutal, and flavored with the right amount of punishing dumb-ass fun. The three-piece still sounds like the Melvins spin-off it ultimately is, of course -- it's not like people were expecting Dale Crover to sing folky lullabies -- but the insane vision of Mountain for the modern day remains perfectly present. Dale Crover and Joey Osbourne trade off on the lead vocals with the appropriately howled and roared testosterone-driven spirit such music demands, while Crover takes the lead guitar and beats it into utter and total submission in a variety of entertaining ways. There's rampaging barely-stop-for-breath boogie like "Short Eyes," a perfectly appropriate stomp through Mose Allison's "Young Man Blues," even some just-epic-enough ...

Civil War Fantasy CD (1998)
Altamont CD discography Born into immediate controversy regarding the original artwork versus the album title, Civil War Fantasy was the first Altamont album proper, a stripped-down album hearkening as much back to bands like Trouble, the Obsessed, Four Horseman, and early Metallica as Southern antecedents like Mollyhatchet and Blackfoot. Though this is a side project for Melvins drummer Dale Crover, the band is obviously regarded as more than a lark. The songs are well-crafted and the rhythm section drives the songs like a tugboat. In addition, Crover's guitar playing is tasteful and dynamic, given that he is primarily known for his Bonham-esque prowess behind the kit. Also included in this first release is an excellent rendition of the Hendrix tune "Ezy Ryder." Though fans of Melvins might expect the unexpected, it ain't here. The recording is simple and documentarian, and so is the music. ...
