Brokeback and the Black Rock CD (2013)
Pausing for almost a decade after the release of 2003's Looks at the Bird, Tortoise member Douglas McCombs' long-running side project Brokeback re-emerged with an entirely new lineup and eventually Brokeback and the Black Rock, the entity's fourth proper full-length. With so much time passing since the group's last output, and a mostly new cast of players, McCombs rallied his troops together for a year or two of ...

Looks at the Bird CD (2003)
Brokeback music CDs On its third release, Brokeback brings the quiet. While Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier and Mary Hansen contribute their exquisite vocals to a few tracks, they're mostly of the wordless sort, used more for spice or texture than as a main ingredient. One of those numbers, "In the Reeds," could almost be mistaken for an outtake from the bossa nova landmark Getz/Gilberto featuring the similarly angelic-sounding Astrud Gilberto. Looks at ...

Field Recordings from the Cook County Water Table CD (1999)
Brokeback discography Doug McCombs (Tortoise, Pullman, Eleventh Dream Day) is in love with his six-string bass--the same reason listeners are likely to be in love with this disc. FIELD RECORDINGS FROM THE COOK COUNTY WATER TABLE is gentle and beautiful post-rock (post-rock, the DMZ between indie-rock and contemporary instrumental), where the silence between the notes is as important as the notes themselves. With a focus on melody and mood rather ...

Morse Code In The Modern Age: Across The Americas CD (2001)
Brokeback songs This is an Enhanced audio CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Brokeback lets loose on Morse Code for the Modern Age: Across the Americas. More improvised than Field Recordings From the Cook County Water Table, Douglas McCombs and friends have strung together a flowing, watery set of three unrelated pieces. It exhibits the cohesiveness of a few post-rock stars and liberates the deep-down, head-nodding sound that's made McCombs semi-famous. On this EP, Neil Kupersmith joins McCombs as a full partner. The first of the three tracks, "Lives of the Rhythm Experts" throbs with understated bass melody. Not surprising, since both full-time members play bass as their first instrument. Song number two, "Flat Handed and on the Wing," exudes much of the same. More jazzed up than the intro, it weaves in and out of groovability; it's neither energetic nor boring. The final song is a concise, spruced-up cover of Roy Orbison's "Running Scared." All in all, the album is a patchwork quilt: McCombs and Kupersmith never recorded together. McCombs laid down the early tracks in studio improvisations with friends, and Kupersmith overdubbed his parts later. A good buy for Tortoise and Chicago Underground ...
