Rescue CD (2002)
Like the Deftones, Codeseven mixes its metal history with emotional pop influences for a record that really transcends genre. The title Rescue says it all: This isn't death metal, doom metal, or nu-metal -- far from it, the record is part emo, part pop, and a little metal. "Southie" couples vocal pleas with melodic grandeur and then adds in some metal bombast. "The Camel City" evokes the slick psychedelic rock of Pink Floyd circa A Momentary Lapse of Reason. The dark atmosphere of "Sounds of Cyan and Magenta" sounds closest to Echo & the Bunnymen and "Smell of Yellow and Black" is pure space rock, with vocals that conjure up Jeff Buckley. When all is said and done, Codeseven manages to totally confound listeners' expectations with a resonant album poised for wide appeal. ~ Charles Spano

Division of Labor CD (1999)
Division of Labor is the follow-up to Codeseven's 1998 full-length album, A Sense of Coalition, and to say the risk in making this album was great is being polite. In many hardcore fans' minds, Coalition was the epitome of perfect emocore. How does one follow up such an album? Codeseven chose to go the quick way and release a small collection of new material packaged as a mini-LP. Containing six tracks of unrelenting frustration and beauty, Division of Labor marks a departure from the punk stylings found on a number of tracks on the Coalition album and takes more of a step into full-on hardcore and emo. In tradition, Codeseven begins this album with the intensity of a trapped badger -- mean, heavy, and foaming at the mouth -- yet by the time the last track finishes, this wild beast has been calmed and tamed to a certain level of safety. Unfortunately what this album fails to do is fully display all of Codeseven's many talents. While the album does outdo itself musically, emotionally, and vocally, Jeff Jenkins' melodic voice is drowned out by the overbearing thunderhouse provided by the three Tuttle brothers and Eric Weyer. David Owen has gotten his scream stabilized, with less cracking and screeching, yet something seems missing. The best way to explain this is by listening to the piano that wraps up "Leaches of Karma." Although at first sounding beautiful and light, one ...

Sense of Coalition CD (1998)
Codeseven melds spastic hardcore with upbeat punk stylings and layers the music with incredibly beautiful singing that could melt even the coldest heart on their 1998 album, A Sense of Coalition. This six-piece hailing from North Carolina has seemingly collected all their favorite elements from their record collection and compacted them through a siphon, allowing only the genre's life fluid to leak through into their exquisite 11-track disc. From the heartbreaking melody of "Menthol Kings" to the excruciating screams which explode out of the speakers on the old-school thrash anthem "Daily Ethic," the listener will be hypnotized and viscously beaten by Codeseven's volatile concoction. At times vocalist Jeff Jenkins carries a light-as-a-feather croon similar to Deftones' Chino Moreno, yet Jenkins comes across as having a much more delicate voice. This is well documented on "Incommunicado," as it has the ...
