Catch the Fall CD (1987)
Dolphin Brothers CD discography For the first time since former band Japan's Tin Drum, the duo of Steve Jansen and Richard Barbieri return to pop terra firma. The woozy title piece rekindles their Oriental iconography. "Shining" is a pastel pop/rocker followed by another single, "Second Sight," a musical cross-reference between Icehouse, Duran Duran, and Howard Jones. "Catch" features a rare appearance by the Blue Nile's Robert Bell, Danny Thompson, and David Rhodes, known for his work with Peter Gabriel, with instrumentation ranging from double bass to Thai flute. So it's a poppier rendition of David Sylvian's Brilliant Trees. "Host to the Holy" displays a fine Barbieri synth intro, while the refreshing "Pushing the River" concludes an accomplished vocal set, not yet surpassed. ~ Kelvin Hayes
