 Flying Lotus Biography
One of a handful of producers pushing a futuristic agenda for hip-hop and its myriad offshoots, Artist (born Steven Ellison) began his career as a filmmaker, sometimes writing beats for commercial projects such as station IDs for cable TV's Cartoon Network. His debut album, 1983, was released in 2006 by the L.A.-based experimental electronic imprint Plug Research. Many critics compared FlyLo's slippery beat programming to the off-time, organic grooves of producers like Madlib and J Dilla; some likened the music's anti-gravitational sprawl to Ellison's aunt, the late jazz legend Alice Coltrane. With his stock rising, FlyLo signed, in 2007, to the venerable U.K. label Warp Records, releasing two EPs and an acclaimed second album, LOS ANGELES (2008).
