Heaven & Hell Biography
Heaven & Hell CD discography Artist were the modern restoration of the classic Black Sabbath lineup that existed between 1979 and 1982, featuring Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow, Dio), Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice (Dio, Erik Norlander). (Original Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward declined to join the group.) The band took its name from Dio's 1980 debut album with Sabbath, so as not to confuse fans, since the Ozzy Osbourne lineup of Black Sabbath was not considered defunct. The music could be described as adventurous, progressive doom metal, which essentially picked up where the band had left off many years ago. While Artist claimed to be a part-time band, it performed on several worldwide tours and released the critically acclaimed album THE DEVIL YOU KNOW in 2009. In November of that year it was disclosed that Dio was suffering from stomach cancer, although the disease was reportedly in its early stages and hope was expressed that Dio would fully recover and return to performing. Nevertheless, Artist subsequently canceled their summer 2010 touring plans and, sadly, Dio succumbed to the disease on May 16, 2010, at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, USA.
