High Society music CDs 2009 collection from the band Inspired by the music of the 1930's. High Society were a refreshing change from the typical Pop/Rock idiom when they released their debut album in 1980 which featured their UK hit single 'I Never Go Out In The Rain' The group was formed around the nucleus of three talented individuals: Terry Cassidy (Gin House and The Monks), Richard Hudson and John Ford (The Strawbs, Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, Hudson Ford and The Monks). Over the years, the band has performed at diverse locations such as Berkeley Square Ball, The Aces Casino in Malaga, The Manhattan Brewery and even a jumbo jet 30,000 feet above the Atlantic. 21 tracks. Richard Hudson and John Ford, who had played together in the British folk-rock band Strawbs and then worked as the duo Hudson Ford, turned the stylistic clock back when the 1980s rolled around, forming High Society. On I NEVER GO OUT IN THE RAIN, High Society revives the music-hall/Tin Pan Alley sound of the 1930s; it's easy to imagine the title tune--a U.K. hit--as the signature song from an MGM musical, crooned by Fred Astaire. When everyone else was rocking things up, High Society had the fortitude (and abilitiy) to head in the opposite direction. High Society CD discography In 1992, the Indiana Historical Society marked native son Cole Porter's centenary a year late by issuing the box set You're the Top: Cole Porter in the 1930s. The organization followed in 1999 with another box that surveyed the rest of Porter's career, You're Sensational: Cole Porter in the '20s, '40s & '50s. In 2002, the three discs from that collection were released separately. This is the third of them, covering 1948-1956 and named after the 1956 movie musical that featured a Porter score. The organizing principle of both of the boxes, explained in the liner notes (which are not included here), was to take Porter's work in chronological order by show and film, but not by date of actual recording. Thus, this volume, High Society, mixes a 1982 Bobby Short performance of "I Am in Love" from 1953's Can-Can with recordings of songs from the show made much closer to its premiere.
