Word from Pluto CD
Ho-Ag music CDs Although Ho-Ag is a band nominally based in Boston, it is not surprising to note that two of its principals, singer/guitarist Matt Parish and singer/keyboardist Tyler Derryberry, are actually from Ohio, since the hard rock quintet evidences a distinct sonic heritage from the Ohio branch of the punk/new wave movement of the late '70s, as represented by such bands as Devo and Pere Ubu. (Among New York groups of the same era, the closest equivalent is Richard Hell & the Voidoids.) That means staccato rhythms and jagged shards of electric guitar, with harshly sung (if not shouted) vocals from either Parish or Derryberry, or both together. Derryberry, whose keyboard credit reads "electronics," also likes to fill in here and there with synthesized bloops and bleeps. Ho-Ag also bears the influence of thrash and speed metal outfits like Anthrax, but they don't tend to keep up the assault throughout a song. Rather, they like to halt the furious playing abruptly in order to leave space for a moment of silence or a bit of a lyric before pounding headlong again. This gives the music a surprising quality at the same time that it demonstrates that arrangements which sometimes seem nearly out of control are really carefully planned and rehearsed. ~ William Ruhlmann

Ho-Ag Equals Go-At CD (2007)
Ho-Ag songs Ho-Ag played their first show on May 25, 2002 at the Midway in Jamaica Plain with the Young Sexy Assassins, Tunnel of Love, and Usaisamonster. They began their career with a cover of the old HBO movie intro theme song and later tried to sell their demo ("The Meteor Is a Decoy") to people at the show. They have now been playing shows for nearly three years at rock clubs, converted industrial warehouses, dank basements, wine-drinking art parties, middle-of-nowhere Christmas tree farms and woodsy backyard tool sheds.
Begun as a streamlined four-piece by vocalist/guitarist Matt Parish, bassist Dave Dines, and guitarist Patrick Kim, Ho-Ag released its first album, Ho Ag Equals Go At, in 2003. Declared both a "primal and modernly demented" and "an off-balance charge of invigorated rock" by Columbus Alive and "a frightwig cacophony of art-skronk murder ballad" by The Boston Phoenix, Ho-Ag has spent the last year mutating and growing new limbs. This is a group that teams up to balances Braniac-like Moog and guitar freakouts with more deliberately paced horror movie melodies that could be at home alongside sinister mood pieces by Tom Waits or a really depressed Raymond Scott. They've added a second "front man" (Tyler Derryberry), who Parish grew up with in Ohio along with Kim, watching Mystery Science Theatre 3000 and reading comics. Eric Meyer replaced Jonathan Ruhe on drums in February of 2004 and brought a ton of tricks, experience (pop rock bands, jazz combos, drum line instruction), and gadgets (saw blades, mallets, bells!).
Ho-Ag then began experimenting at shows, in front of their Boston audience, learning new songs for every ...
