Keith Jarrett albums The double album Sleeper contains a previously unreleased live concert by Keith Jarrett's European quartet from the '70s, recorded at Tokyo's Nakano Sun Plaza on April 16, 1979. Together with saxophonist Jan Garbarek, bassist Palle Danielsson, and drummer Jon Christensen, Jarrett performs seven of his own compositions: "Personal Mountains," "Innocence," "So Tender," "Oasis," "Chant of the Soil," "Prism," and "New Dance" -- the latter song being the shortest here at seven minutes, while "Oasis" clocks in at over 28 minutes! As a companion piece to the live albums Nude Ants and Personal Mountains (both recorded the same year, even though the latter album was only released in 1989), Sleeper offers another noteworthy document of the creative interplay between these four musicians. ~ Christian Genzel Recording information: Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo (04/16/1979). Keith Jarrett albums Restlessly searching out new territory for improvisations, Keith Jarrett tackles the massive Karl Joseph Riepp "Trinity" Baroque pipe organ at the Benedictine Abbey in Ottobeuren, Germany. He starts out with a pastoral "Hymn of Remembrance," then embarks upon a long nine-movement series of "Spheres" before closing with a grand "Hymn of Release." The devotee of Jarrett's piano will quickly discover that his organ idiom has nothing to do with his piano performances; he likes slow-moving, pulseless, sometimes dissonant, sometimes reverent or ecstatic smears of sound (which makes practical sense in the hugely reverberant churches where pipe organs are found). In the ninth movement, Jarrett can fool you into thinking that he is playing floating electronic space music (on an 18th-century organ!). Yet if one must apply a category, despite the improvisatory element, this double-CD is contemporary classical organ ...

Keith Jarrett music CDs Albums that sell vast quantities are not always to be recommended. This exceptional example of solo piano is the biggest selling record in the 25 year history of the pioneering jazz label ECM. It is an almost perfect recording of the art of piano dynamics, full of emotion, and throughout the hour or so duration the listener is never bored. Jarrett has repeated his concerts of improvisation hundreds of times, many have been recorded, and presumably, many routes of his spontaneity have led to blind alleys of jazz doodling. This is the best recorded example of the art, unlikely to be bettered. Recorded live in Koln, Germany on January 24, 1975. Solo performer: Keith Jarrett (piano). Composer: Keith Jarrett. Keith Jarrett discography This 1991 recording by Keith Jarrett's so-called Standards Trio was recorded less than two weeks after the death of Miles Davis, who's pictured in silhouette on the cover photograph. The choice of material reflects that of Davis, the man to whom this music was recorded in tribute. There are standards (such as the title song), bracing numbers by Davis contemporaries (Thelonious Monk's "Straight No Chaser" and Oliver Nelson's "Butch And Butch"), and eloquently emotive originals. The centerpiece is the extended "For Miles," which, over the course of its 18 minutes, celebrates the darkness and light of Davis's life and death. The fact that Miles Davis could be celebrated on an album that features no trumpet speaks both to the breadth of Davis's musical reach, as well as the prodigious strengths of these three players. Recorded at the Power Station, New ...

Keith Jarrett songs Recorded live in Bremen, Germany and Lausanne, Switzerland in 1973. These are the recordings that made Keith Jarrett famous. Originally released as a three-LP set, the two solo piano recitals feature Jarrett freely improvising and never seeming to run out of ideas. A simple figure often develops through repetition and subtle variations into a rather complex sequence and eventually evolves into a new figure. One of the improvisations lasts for three LP sides (64 minutes), while the second concert has two long solos for 30 and 35 minutes, respectively. Despite the length, the music never loses one's interest, making this an essential recording for all jazz collections. ~ Scott Yanow Solo performer: Keith Jarrett (piano). Keith Jarrett albums Rio, the double-disc solo concert recording by Keith Jarrett, marks his 40th anniversary as an ECM recording artist; coincidentally, Facing You, his debut for the label, was a solo piano recording, though cut in a studio. Many of Jarrett's improvised solo concerts have represented benchmarks in his career: The Köln Concert, The Sun Bear Solo Concerts, and La Scala among them. His musical and philosophical approach toward recording this way has evolved and been refined over the decades, but nowhere more so than on Rio, a complete document of his show at the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro in April of 2011. The date is a hint that something very different is afoot here: Jarrett's live offerings are usually issued years after an event instead of mere months afterwards (the pianist called label boss Manfred Eicher from ...

Keith Jarrett songs Recorded live at Orchard Hall and Bunka Kaikan, Tokyo, Japan in April 2001. Recorded live in Tokyo in April 2001, Always Let Me Go is Keith Jarrett's 149th concert in Japan. Joined by his long-standing partners Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, these performances are playful, explosive, somber, and completely improvised. After 20 years of working together, they trust each other (and the audience) enough to deliver over two hours of unscripted music. DeJohnette prowls through his drums like a restless cougar: he chatters, scuffles, and pounces on the skins with agility. Likewise, Peacock spoons out a concrete foundation of bass; one that bubbles as it spreads through the cracks in Jarrett's 88 keys (which serve the pianist so very well). For listeners familiar with the trio's Inside Out CD, here is the same idea further elaborated on. "Hearts in Space" spirals out of the starting gate with geometrical tremors, as three virtuosos all start their respective engines and read each other's pulses over the course of 32 minutes. The trio effortlessly glide from mood to mood in synchronization to deliver a ballad in the eye of a hurricane, then dismount into straight-ahead swing. "The River" is a stoic hymn, a richness of melancholy in deep scarlet blue. It is Jarrett's only solo here, as brief as it is rewarding. "Paradox" rides the crest of bebop in a simmering stew to close out the first disc with a punch that stops on a dime. There are enough recurring themes here to call it a standard of sorts, and the musicians quickly assume the proper formation as they've done thousands of times before. Disc two opens with "Waves," another half-hour marathon of moods that evolves seamlessly between chromatic stillness, manic fluttering, and gunpowder bop. DeJohnette clearly sets the tone for "Facing East" -- a syncopated clockwork of beat, as Jarrett pinwheels in like-minded percussives with Peacock flipping through volumes of frets. Next comes the aptly titled "Tsunami," which swells and bursts with power before finally subsiding to fractured stillness. It is the fire in the musicians' bellies -- perhaps the darkest and most ferocious passage of the album. As is often the case, Jarrett's distant vocals pinch the air from time to time. Although purists may wince at this additional layer of seasoning, there's no denying his expression comes out of the deepest level of commitment. It is this same commitment that fuels so much of the album. With the knowledge that Always Let Me Go is live and improvised, it adds a rewarding layer of understanding and appreciation, as few musicians can deliver such diamonds with so little structure in place. Song for song, the symbiosis is a marvel to behold -- and the audience knows it. These are gods at play, and the lightning bolts they toss around are awe-inspiring. ~ Glenn Swan /Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnette. Keith Jarrett CD discography One of the longest-lived jazz bands in history is the Keith Jarrett Trio, often referred to as Jarrett's Standards trio. Pianist Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Jack DeJohnette have a musical empathy that can only emerge from a group with a 25-year history (or further since both Peacock and DeJohnette have played with pianist Bill Evans). YESTERDAYS finds the big three going to town on classic bebop ("Shaw'nuff") and classic balladry ("You've Changed," "Stella By Starlight"), proving once again that done-to-death standards can be given a new lease on life. Everyone is at the top of their game, especially Peacock, whose nimble bass gets a little more-than-usual space here. Keith Jarrett CD discography Recorded in Paris in 1976, this is a solo piano album devoted to four pieces. Each of these pieces is divided into two or three sections, with the result a cross between his shorter solo works, such as FACING YOU, and his longer improvisations (THE KOLN CONCERT, SUN BEAR CONCERTS). These are variations on a theme, whose highly contrasting approaches make for a vivid whole. The title piece's second part holds the core melodic structure while turning highly percussive, sounding like rainfall on an outdoor stairway. "Hourglass" finds Jarrett exploring the gospel-tinged sounds he's favored from the earliest years of his career. "Sundial" is the set's most meditative piece, while the aptly named "Sand" is earthier. STAIRCASE is recorded with gorgeous, warm clarity. Recorded at Davout Studio, Paris, France in May 1976. Solo performer: Keith Jarrett (piano).

Keith Jarrett albums One of Keith Jarrett's finest mid-1970s recordings for the Impulse! label, TREASURE ISLAND presents the revered jazz pianist in the company of a killer ensemble that includes Dewey Redman on tenor sax, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums. In addition to the extended pieces "The Rich (And the Poor)" and "Le Mistral," this 1974 outing includes the thrilling and immediate "Blue Streak" and the stately title track, making it a highly dynamic record that reveals the strengthens of all its renowned players. An essential ensemble album for devoted Jarrett fans, TREASURE ISLAND also serves well as an introduction to the revered performer's lauded and prolific `70s era. Keith Jarrett music CDs ARBOUR ZENA offers three Keith Jarrett compositions for orchestra, piano, bass, and saxophones. Jarrett had earlier shown his interest in contemporary classical composition, first with the ambitious IN THE LIGHT and then with LUMINESCENCE, the latter featuring strings rather than piano, laced with Jan Garbarek's saxophone improvisations. The string section here is drawn from the ranks of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. The scoring is subtle, with an emotive shimmering quality--after an extended piano break by Jarrett on "Runes," the strings emerge seemingly out of the piano itself. The meditative mood is sustained throughout the set. Charlie Haden's rich bass tone offers a nice contrast to Garbarek's crystalline timbre. Recorded at Studio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany in October 1975. Personnel: Keith Jarrett (piano); Jan Garbarek (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Charlie Haden (double bass). Recording information: Studio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany (10/1975). Unknown Contributor Role: Radio Symphony Orchestra of Stuttgart. Keith Jarrett albums Recorded live at Royal Festival Hall, London, England on July 26 & 28, 2000. This trio has been most closely associated with its exploration of standards (the group is often referred to as Jarrett's "Standards Trio"). A 1987 US tour departed from that format, heading into the more free-form terrain all three musicians had embraced in the '60s. Those results were heard on the album CHANGELESS. 13 years later, the threesome threw away the songbook again, and this album, recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall in London, captures what transpired. A celebratory spirit pulses through this 78-minute set, with exuberant interplay lighting fires at every turn. Drummer Jack DeJohnette is a marvel, pushing and prodding, and sustaining layered rhythm beds that are at once muscular and supple. In keeping with its usual identity, the trio brings things to a close with Edward Heyman and Victor Young's "When I Fall In Love." The sound quality, as always with ECM Records, is superb. Keith Jarrett discography Recorded on April 5, 6 & 27, 1972. Includes liner notes by Keith Jarrett. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). This was the first real indication to the world that Keith Jarrett was an ambitious, multi-talented threat to be reckoned with, an explosion of polystylistic music that sprawled over two LPs (now squeezed onto a single CD). Using his classic quartet (Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian) as a base, Jarrett occasionally adds the biting rock-edged electric guitar of Sam Brown and always-intriguing percussionist Airto Moreira, and indulges in some pleasant string and brass arrangements of his own, along with some grinding organ smears and acceptable soprano sax. Jarrett again turns his early rampant eclecticism loose -- from earthy gospel-tinged soul-jazz to the freewheeling atonal avant-garde -- yet this time he does it with an exuberance and expansiveness that puts his previous solo work in the shade. "Common Mama," a spicy Latin workout with brass punctuations, "Take Me Back," driving soul jazz with streaks of electric jazz-rock, and the lengthy, nearly free "Nomads" are the most invigorating tracks. ~ Richard S. Ginell Out of print in the US. Digitally remastered pressing of this release, originally issued as a double album in 1972. Sony/BMG. Reissue producer: Bob Belden. Keith Jarrett music CDs Recorded live at Philharmonie Koln, Koln, Germany on October 15, 1989. The Keith Jarrett Standards Trio gets back down to business with two CDs' worth of familiar and perhaps not-so-familiar tunes, recorded in one evening in Cologne, Germany. There is a concept this time, for all the standards carry a dedication to some jazz man or woman who performed them -- and they are not predictable choices; Lee Konitz for "Lover Man," "It's Easy to Remember" for John Coltrane, "All of You" for Miles Davis, etc. Almost every number has a reflective solo piano introduction, with one of the notable exceptions being Jarrett's rolling, convoluted opening variations on "All the Things You Are" (Sonny Rollins). "Solar" (the Bill Evans tribute) has challenging, fractured interplay between Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette and Gary Peacock, and it directly segues into Jarrett's own obsessive "Sun Prayer," which seems to lose its way after a fine start. The other Jarrett composition, "U Dance," a carefree folk-like tune with a rhumba rhythm, closes the concert with a tribute to no one in particular. While the Standards Trio rarely takes anything for granted, transforming everything in its path, the results are not quite as inventive here as on other releases, though Disc Two is clearly more interesting overall than Disc One. Warning to the wary: Keith Jarrett, singer, is in rare groaning form on "I Hear a Rhapsody" and "Solar." ~ Richard S. Keith Jarrett discography Released in 1989, 10 years after it was recorded, PERSONAL MOUNTAINS is a set by Keith Jarrett's so-called "European Quartet." It's a live performance in Tokyo, one week prior to the engagement at New York City's Village Vanguard that resulted in the NUDE ANTS album. What's remarkable about both of these releases is how they showcase the power of this ensemble, only briefly glimpsed on the studio albums (as with the wonderful pair, BELONGING and MY SONG). There has always been a folk-like bearing to the quartet's sound, and their studio work underscores this with concise pieces. However, live they stretch out, creating organically changing landscapes which are by turns emotionally compelling, spiritually resonant, and rich with surprise and invention. The aptly titled 15-minute "Personal Mountains," captures the feel of the Scandinavian homeland of Jarrett's cohorts. Recorded live in Tokyo, Japan in April 1979. Includes liner notes by Peter Ruedi. Keith Jarrett songs "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Keith Jarrett is considered one of the most important pianists to emerge since the '60s. He landed gigs with Art Blakey and the Live/Evil-era Miles Davis Group, then recorded a stunning series of solo improvisations in the '70s that brought him international renown. The prodigious master of melody and improvisation returns to the realm of solo recording with distinctive, impressionistic versions of 10 timeless classics. This hushed, reflective set includes "Someone to Watch Over Me," "I Loves You Porgy," "I Got it Bad and That Ain't Good," his own "Meditation," and even a version of "My Wild Irish Rose" that James Joyce might have enjoyed in Bloom's parlor or a quiet Dublin pub. Jarrett interprets these standards with great reverence, and personalizes each with an evocative mix of neo-classical mastery and jazz soul. On THE MELODY AT NIGHT, WITH YOU, Keith Jarrett conjures a perfect mood for romantic candlelit dinners or quiet introspection. Solo performer: Keith Jarrett (piano). Personnel: Keith Jarrett (piano). Keith Jarrett songs This odd anthology from Atlantic reissues selections from trio dates recorded during the 1960s by Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock, along with otherwise unobtainable early recordings by McCoy Tyner. Jarrett is joined by Charlie Haden and Paul Motian on two originals, both of which show the obvious influence of Bill Evans. Chick Corea is accompanied by Steve Swallow (on acoustic bass rather than the electric bass he switched to a short time later) and Joe Chambers. The pianist's "Tones for Joan's Bones" is swinging, but not nearly as driving as his works in the decades to follow, while his reworking of the show tune "This Is New" features Joe Farrell and Woody Shaw; both tracks also show the influence of Bill Evans. The selections with Herbie Hancock actually come from a Ron Carter-led date (with Billy Cobham rounding out the trio), but these numbers are as much features for the leader as for Hancock; they are the least interesting cuts within this compilation. The Tyner tracks were taped at the end of his third studio session with John Coltrane, although he had performed on a number of earlier live dates with the saxophonist (though none of them were recorded for commercial issue). Because there are no liner notes, one is left to guess whose idea it was for Coltrane to sit out, but Tyner does a credible job with the artist's "Lazy Bird" without his leader and puts his own distinctive stamp on Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way." These two rare selections prove to be the most compelling reason to pick up this CD. ~ Ken Dryden Recorded during the 1960s by Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock, along with otherwise unobtainable early recordings by McCoy Tyner. Keith Jarrett CD discography Recorded live at Teatro Alla Scala, Milan, Italy on February 13, 1995. Includes liner notes by Keith Jarrett. As if Jarrett's music weren't complex, mysterious and beautiful enough, the fact that it is entirely improvised-- that is, that its composition evolves in the real time of the concert, make it a revelation. Music for Jarrett is the process of creativity itself, with all of its attendant delight, frustration and surprises, and LA SCALA is no exception. Recorded live in Milan in 1997 and consisting of three parts, LA SCALA seems to lean more toward classical structures and meters than Jarrett's work that is more readily catagorized as jazz. The concert shifts from gorgeous, lilting clouds of melody to challenging percussive segments based around a droning bass chord; from frenetic runs over the keyboard to reinventions of familiar melody (as in the third part "Over The Rainbow"); between which Jarrett can be heard searching for direction, piecing ideas together, groaning and crying as if overcome by the power flowing through him. As always, Jarrett's inventions lull, surprise, stimulate and astound and LA SCALA, taken as a whole, is certainly one of his finest recordings. Solo performer: Keith Jarrett (piano). Personnel: Keith Jarrett (soprano saxophone, piano). Audio Remixers: Jan Erik Kongshaug; Manfred Eicher. Liner Note Author: Keith Jarrett. Recording information: Teatro alla Scala, Milan, Italy (02/13/1995). Photographer: Judith Joy Ross.

Keith Jarrett music CDs This release commemorates the 25th year of the jazz supergroup of pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, one of the longest-running small combos in jazz history. This threesome is sometimes known as "the standards trio," their specialty being classic songs that have become cornerstones of jazz and pre-rock pop ("What's New," "The Song Is You"). One special thing about this trio is that both Peacock and DeJohnette played with the late Bill Evans, the intensely lyrical piano icon who was one of Jarrett's influences. Aspects of Evans's approach are all over their playing, from the melodious interpretations and innate sense of swing to the economy of style and graceful technique. Even though Jarrett, Peacock, and DeJohnette stretch out quite a bit, there is nary a wasted or unnecessary note. Nearly two hours of lively, thoughtful, and beautifully recorded music, MY FOOLISH HEART - LIVE is a necessity for fans of piano-trio jazz. Recording information: Stravinski Auditorium, Montreux, Switzerland (07/22/2001). Photographers: Junichi Hirayama; Rose Anne Jarrett. Personnel: Keith Jarrett (piano); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Keith Jarrett; Gary Peacock (double bass). Liner Note Author: Keith Jarrett.

Keith Jarrett Biography

Pianist Artist has carved out a unique place among contemporary improvising musicians. After a brief mid-'60s stint with Art Blakey, Jarrett joined the enormously popular Charles Lloyd Quartet before being recruited by Miles Davis at the height of early fusion. Initially, Jarrett's solo career continued in a similar electric vein, but he soon turned exclusively to acoustic instruments. His improvised solo piano concerts captured genius at work, and his Standards Trio redefined the genre. In between, he has performed classical works and his own folk-inspired music, and he has been an outspoken critic of the commercialization of jazz.
