Liguori Gaetano discography Hard bop stylist Gaetano Liguri performs nine originals with his trio for this satisfying date of spirited jazz. Quintessentially Italian, Liguri is a strong technician who incorporates folk melodies in his compositions. Backed by bassist Mariano Nocito and drummer Massimo Pintori, Liguri favors dramatic harmonies, up-tempo melodies, and danceable themes. The pianist is clearly the leader, taking the lion's share of solo space. The trio plays tightly, tempos changing flawlessly midstream. Liguri flirted with the local free music scene in the '70s, but there are no such influences on this recording. It all swings, and while there is nothing unique about this performance, it is a strong effort that never tires. This is a fine introduction to mainstream Italian jazz, and a thoroughly delightful set. ~ Steve Loewy
