Lionel Hampton Biography
Artist was one of the first major artists to use the vibraphone as a solo instrument, setting the standard for others to follow. He first gained popularity as a member of the famous Benny Goodman quartet of the late-1930s swing era. Hamp's dynamic performances often featured him playing both vibes and drums, as well as dancing in his lively style. A tireless performer, Hampton could still keep audiences enthralled well past his 90th birthday.
