Tangier CD (2002)
Medusa Cyclone albums Tangier marks the third outing from reclusive multi-instrumentalist Keir McDonald under his chosen nom de guerre, Medusa Cyclone, and, as usual, it provides a mostly instrumental fly-over of the outermost rings of planet rock & roll. Like the interconnecting limbs of a disembodied soundtrack, gently ambient numbers "Orange Sunshine" and "Pulsar" start the ball rolling in mellow, sweetly chiming fashion, cautiously setting the stage for more traditional rock fare like "Black Cobra," as well as occasional detours like the warped calypso of "El Mar Caribe." Technically, these forays into more recognizable song styles add necessary variety to Tangier's quite nebulous, free-form vibe, but, conversely, theirs is a dubious presence that detracts from the album's natural flow. Sure enough, a certain something is lost in transition during the dead silence that divides the latter-named tune and the measured pacing of the subsequent three-song cycle, which slowly builds toward a swirling, soft catharsis on "Beltane." This is in turn followed by yet another detour via the 13-minute title track's techno-fueled rave, which eventually brings Medusa Cyclone's compelling, if slightly disjointed, sonic voyage to an end. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Mr. Devil CD (1998)
Medusa Cyclone music CDs Including only two tracks with vocals, this largely instrumental album builds a gritty, floating world out of interweaving, disembodied guitars. Huysmans offered a re-analysis of dust in La-Bas saying, "Dust isn't a bad thing. Besides having the taste of ancient biscuit and the smell of an old book, it is the floating velvet which softens hard surfaces, the fine dry wash which takes the garishness out of crude colour schemes." Medusa Cyclone similarly employs the grainy texture of slightly distorted guitars and machine effects. Blending together these roughened sounds with mysterious, ominous voices into a deliberate, plodding delivery produces a foreboding, sinister sound. It is easy to imagine the slow, abandoned tumble of a disabled spacecraft in deep space. Knowing Medusa Cyclone's Detroit origination and noting the CD booklet's photography, perhaps urban ruins and B-movie entertainment conjure this mood for Medusa Cyclone. "Mr. Devil" is a languidly diabolic take on psychedelic free rock, space rock from a gloomy planet. Occasionally, as on the three-guitar "Hypnosis Take," a glimmer of a hopeful melody ...

Medusa Cyclone CD (1995)
Medusa Cyclone discography Has Medusa Cyclone invented a new genre of music: new age alternative? This one-man band (its main member is Keir McDonald, who gets help from others from time to time) uses textured sounds that can induce a hypnotic state ("Black Dawn"), or create a creepy yet calming effect ("Burner"). The opening "Gravity Rock" is space rock at its finest and most out-there, while "X-Plodo Sun Hat" shows that McDonald has a knack for writing effective ambient pieces as well. "Dream House" contains lead vocals that sound like they were recorded on the moon, while the last two lengthy pieces, "Assigned Frequency" and "Helium Head," use tape loops and stretch to the 14- and 29-minute marks, respectively. Such popular artists as Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead are popularizing the futuristic space rock sound, but Medusa Cyclone's uncompromising and sometimes uncommercial take on ...
