||For the Taken CD (2006)
Mercy Fall albums On its 2006 debut, the heavy-rock ensemble Mercy Fall offers up an 11-song set that places it in the ranks of Nickelback, Godsmack, and other likeminded acts. While the surging opener, "Insurmountable," and the fast-paced "I Got Life" showcase the Arizona band's energetic, riff-laden attack, other tracks such as "Not Broken Down" and "Fade" provide an outlet for Mercy Fall's more sensitive side, and call attention to frontman Nate Stone's heartfelt vocals and guitarist Jeff Lusby's versatile playing. Although it reveals little in the way of innovation, FOR THE TAKEN is a solid first release by a competent neo-grunge group, and should appeal to fans of the aforementioned artists.
For The Taken is a provocative and powerful debut for the Flagstaff, Arizona-based foursome, marked by expansive sonic strength and unique lyrical expression. Songs like the razor-riffed first single, "I Got Life", traverse a vast terrain of emotions, veering from brooding atmospherics to rousing heavy rock dynamism, all marked by singer Nate Stone's distinctive vocal range and phrasing. With For The Taken, Mercy Fall has crafted a work of extraordinary potency, demonstrating rock's remarkable capacity for examining and exploring the human condition.
