As a member of the legendary 1950s, '60s, and '70s combo the Modern Jazz Quartet, Artist was one of the most high-profile vibraphonists in jazz. His swinging style brought the vibes to the forefront on many classic recordings with other legends like Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, and many others. His classic tune "Bags' Groove" has remained part of the standard jazz repertoire since its debut.
