 Natalie Merchant Biography
Artist joined the highly regarded 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 while studying at New York's Jamestown Community College. She eventually left that successful band over a decade later to release her self-produced solo debut, TIGERLILLY, in 1995. The album broke the U.S. Top 20 and established Merchant as one of the leading female pop artists of the '90s. Merchant's ambitious follow-up, OPHELIA (1998), continued her commercial success. She subsequently teamed up with producer T-Bone Burnett, mining grittier folk rock territory for the album, MOTHERLAND (2001). She returned in 2003 with a fine collection of traditional and contemporary folk songs, THE HOUSE CARPENTER'S DAUGHTER, for her Myth America label.
