Kings and Queens CD (2006)
National Trust music CDs Chicago's National Trust performs an ironic but respectful version of early-1980s funk, complete with beatboxes, antique synthesizers, and falsetto vocals. Its second album is an attractive blend of vintage-sounding R&B dance tracks like "It's Just Cruel," breathy Prince-style vocalizing on "Show and Tell," and sexy after-hours jams like "Canday's Away." The duo have gone to much trouble in their quest for musical authenticity--their recreations of the classic sounds of the '80s are impeccable--and the result is an enjoyable, if slightly smirking romp through a variety of soul and dance idioms of yesteryear.

A listen to DEKKAGAR (no, we don't know what it means either) tends to bear that out; no one will mistake any of these carefully crafted items for an actual Doobie Brothers nugget. But there's no wiseguy ...
