||Stimulation Festival CD (1992) |
All songs written by members of Pain Teens except "Wild World" (Cave/Harvey) and "Hangman's Rope" (traditional).
Underground noise-rockers Pain Teens were just developing a national identity when Stimulation Festival, their second collection of new material, was released by Trance Syndicate. Similar to the group's previous official releases (and their many '80s self-released cassettes), this 1991 effort is pasted together with Scott Ayers' strange tape loops/guitar experiments and vocalist Bliss Blood's detached ruminations detailing all things shocking and unmentionable. Death, struggle, and female health/physiology are subjects typically covered either directly or metaphorically -- that is, depending on how you read the song titles, as Ayers' sonic monstrosities often drown out Blood's missives. A unique and prolific outfit, Pain Teens cast out discs like Stimulation Festival for over a decade, to the delight of many extreme rock fanatics. However, recommending one of the group's recordings over another is difficult due to the lack of definitive songs or performances. Having said that, Stimulation Festival would be a fine first purchase for new fans, as it is nothing if not representative of Pain Teens' sonic assault. ~ Vincent Jeffries

PAIN TEENS contains four bonus tracks not on the original album which are taken from Pain Teens' earlier cassette releases.
This tenth-anniversary reissue of the Pain Teens' eponymous release starts with the unforgettable "Inside Me." Simultaneously, vocalist Bliss Blood paints a picture of inviting sexuality and morbid, chthonic evil. The clamorous, industrial rhythms of guitarist Scott Ayers (Walking Timebombs) contribute admirably. Tapes, fractured drum rhythms and mutant guitar combine to make the Pain Teens sound like a classic dialect between Throbbing Gristle, Einstürzende Neubaten and Henry Cow. Disturbing and haunting, this edition includes tracks off of pre-1988 insanely rare Pain Teens ...

||Born In Blood/Case Histories CD (1990) |
Despite the grim title and disturbing cover art, Houston's Pain Teens combine elements of goth rock and industrial noise into a surprisingly melodic melange likely to appeal even to those who might not normally consider themselves fans of that kind of music. Which is to say, all is not doom and gloom and clattering percussion (although there's plenty of both). The Teens have a firm grasp on song structure and Bliss Blood's vocals are always pleasing, if somewhat remote (both sonically and emotionally), no matter what dark topic she may ...
