Paul Smith Trio CD discography In a follow-up project to his two-CD all-star project of 2000, drummer Stix Hooper produced a second volume of interesting sessions in 2001 involving famous jazz names. This time there are six different groupings. First for the weak points. Anita O'Day is on four selections (one being a medley). Her last recording had been in 1993 and at that point she had proved that she had no voice left. The eight years that passed up to the time of this recording did not result in her intonation or range coming back, so one will not want to hear her 13 minutes on this two-fer more than once; they should not have been released. Also, Les McCann's feature on "Right Here and Now" is a bit of a throwaway and forgettable. Fortunately, the remainder of Legacy Lives On, Vol. 2 is on a much higher level. George Shearing is typically tasteful and lightly swinging on three numbers in a quartet with guitarist Reg Schwager, bassist Neil Swainson, and Hooper. Cedar Walton and Eastern Rebellion (a quartet with tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore) plays top-notch hard bop on three numbers, including Blue Mitchell's "Fungii Mama." Terry Gibbs, in his quartet pieces with Larry Koonse, shows that he has not lost any of his energy or enthusiasm. And best are a trio of pieces (including "Melancholy Baby" and Al Cohn's "Travismo") featuring the quintet of tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb (who is quite exuberant), the late trumpeter Conte Candoli, Pete Jolly, bassist Jim DeJulio, and drummer Larance Marable.
