Mindeater CD (2011)
Phantom Family Halo CD discography This collaborative EP between Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy) and experimental acid-folk outfit Phantom Family Halo should please fans of Oldham's earlier, tinnier work, especially that which was done under the Palace moniker. Raw, lo-fi, and unfussy, Mindeater doesn't make a very big initial impression, but there's a grim, rustic eeriness to the whole affair that suggests more than just a shared Kentucky upbringing. Steeped in the kind of vague, messianic Laurel Canyon vibe that permeated some of the creepier Grateful Dead outings, the four tracks -- one of which ("I Wonder If I Care as Much") is a fuzzed out Everly Brothers cover -- sound like someone crept up behind the gang with a tape recorder, waited until the last campfire ember dimmed, and then hit the road, only to be found years later in a ravine with the goods in tow. ~ James Christopher Monger
Recording information: Logan Street, Louisville, KY.

Legend Of Black Six CD (2007)
Phantom Family Halo discography The Phantom Family Halo are a willful anachronism, seemingly having heard no music past 1980. Even the production is retro on The Legend of Black Six. Instead of modern sheen and over-compression, the sound is natural and dynamic; drums actually sound like drums. ...

 Phantom Family Halo Biography
Phantom Family Halo music CDs Trailblazing, experimental acid-folk outfit Artist formed in Louisville, Kentucky around core members Michael McMahan (the For Carnation) and Dominic Cipolla (Sapat). Steeped in the darker, progressive sounds of the '60s and '70s, the group skillfully blends the savvy, avant-garde folk of Six Organs of Admittance with the explosive, swampy, unpredictable psych rock of Roky Erickson. PFH released its debut long-player, Legend of Black Six, in 2007, followed by Monoliths & These Flowers Never Die in 2009. In 2011, the band unleashed Mindeater, a collaborative EP with Bonnie "Prince" Billy, on the Knitting Factory label. ~ James Christopher Monger
