Those who think the entire story of '70s rock stars Kansas was radio-ready arena-rock anthems will be surprised by what they find here. Anyone who's been paying attention all along, however, knows that the band's early albums were full of complex prog rock that owed much to early Yes and King Crimson. The earliest incarnation of Kansas, presented here in all it's embryonic glory, shared only guitarist/composer Kerry Livgren with the subsequent phase of the group. Still, there's an audible link between the heavily Brit-influenced prog on offer here and the first couple of Kansas albums. The major differences are a more sophisticated, less commercial approach to arrangement, and a pronounced jazz influence most apparent in the Elton Dean-like sax work of John Bolton.
