Swing 220 CD (2010)
Rusty Holloway discography Welcome to Swing 220. My colleagues and I will examine some of the essential repertoire from this genre of indigenous American music. In our "discussions" you'll hear how tunes in this style become vehicles for improvisation, conversation, and expression. Our hope is that you'll also detect humor, pathos, and even "insights into the human condition." You may want to take notes, particularly some of those played by Professor Holloway and Mr. Jenkins. At some point, in lieu of a quiz, we'll have ...

Evidence CD (2000)
Rusty Holloway CD discography with Boling's delightful solo. The leader kicks off "'Round Midnight" unaccompanied, adding his own dissonant but elegant touches in this frequently recorded landmark jazz composition. "Fungii Mama" has a calypso flavor reminiscent of Sonny Rollins' "St. Thomas." Boling avoids the predictable path to introduce Jerome Kern's "All the Things You Are" -- instead of choosing Dizzy Gillespie's famous B flat theme to venture into this standard, he comes up with a fresh vamp of his own, then segues seamlessly into its famous theme. It is obvious that these three musicians have worked together ...

Rusty Holloway music CDs Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on November 20, 1976. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.
This CD has highlights from what was originally a two-LP set taken from the 40th anniversary Carnegie Hall concert of Woody Herman. That event was most notable for having sets featuring alumni and the current version of the Woody Herman Orchestra. Despite the impressive personnel, not everything came off that well ("Four Brothers" is just so-so), and Herman's tendency to introduce soloists while they are playing is a bit intrusive. The only New Thundering Herd ...

For the first half of the program he welcomed back many of his alumni including such veterans as tenors Flip Phillips, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Jimmy Giuffre and Al Cohn, the Candoli brothers, trombonist Phil Wilson and singer Mary Ann McCall.
