Season To Risk discography All music written by Season To Risk. All lyrics written or co-written by Steve Tulipana. Kansas City, MO's Season to Risk has always been a heavy band, but living for two years in a van while supporting their first album squeezed every last ounce of restraint from them. In a Perfect World, their second record and major-label debut for Columbia, is a vitriolic stew of epic proportions, all fire and brimstone, bile and blood. This album sets a high-water mark for aggressive, dissonant hardcore rock; the songs swell with tension and then burst at the seams in noisy catharsis. Singer, er, vocalist Steve Tulipana has command of a sizable range of rants, screams, bellows, and barks, the better to deliver his oddly poetic, apocalyptic narratives. Guitarist Duane Trower has never heard a dissonant note or squeal of feedback he didn't like, and the album's scant melodies lie buried beneath strata of mountain-crushing distortion. The rhythm section, however, remains the band's secret weapon: Jason Gerken's busy but precise pummeling of the skins and Paul Malinowski's grinding bass reign in the unpent aggression and nail it to the floor. Season to Risk also tempers the aggression with an industrial-punk energy that brands the disc as distinctly un-metal, despite the distorted roar. Trower favors jagged, dischordant chords over the meat-and-potatoes power chords and obnoxious solos that mar many aggressive rock albums. Additionally, noise guru Martin Bisi's dirty-basement production fends off any whiff of polish; rough edges permeate the entire album. Choice cuts include "Bloodugly," "Terrain Vague," and the kickoff song, "Jack Frost." ~ Ted Alvarez Recorded at B.C. Studios, Brooklyn, New York.
