Soulskin CD (2003)
SoulSkin albums "Texture" is the operative word in this intriguing collaboration of five seasoned backup musicians. SoulSkin emphasizes legato phrasing in arrangements that utilize lots of pads and long notes, or create propulsion at medium tempos with only minimal percussive intrusion. Viola and soprano saxophone add dimension to Rob Meurer's lustrous synth timbres and piano rhythms, sometimes ingeniously suggesting other instrumentation, such as a cabaret accordion on a slithering rendition of "Whatever Lola Wants." Into this mix Karen Kraft's throaty contralto sinks like a weary body into a steaming bath. All of this adds up to a sound that's full of shadows; you keep thinking that a guitar solo lurks around the next corner, like danger hidden down an alleyway, but it never shows its face, and we're left tantalized by the implications, even more than the actualities, of this music. ~ Robert L. Doerschuk
