Krist Novoselics' new project, SWEET 75, still retains certain Nirvana-like qualities, which is only natural, since his bass work was such an essential element of his former band's sound. However, Sweet 75's approach differs from that of Nirvana in that the guitars don't grind in your face with the ferocity of a helicopter blade. Instead, SWEET 75 offers songs that are often rough and edgy while utilizing the pop skills of guest Peter Buck to add some accessible melodicism. The mix works well. Singer Yva Las Vegas, who makes up the other half of Sweet 75, is the nineties Latina equivalent to Siouxsie Sioux. Grunge rhythms and Gothic vocals with a Latin flair make SWEET 75 a solid freshman effort.
