U2 CD discography The larger-than-life rock band is given perhaps the only treatment that can properly capture its outsized popularity with a 3D concert film extravaganza. Produced by the 3D masters at 3ality Digital Entertainment, the film comprises footage from seven different South American concerts during the group's 2007 Vertigo Tour. A massive undertaking, the project called for nine different cameras, making it the first-ever 3-D multi-camera live shoot. Directors Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington had previously worked with the band--Owens as the designer of screen visuals for their tours, and Pellington as the director for the "One" video--and they may have succeeded in doing what few concert films can, by truly capturing the ecstatic joy of a massive rock show. While still offering plenty of footage of the rapturous crowd, the film puts you exactly where you want to be at a concert: as close as possible to the performers. You get so close, in fact, that the first time the camera swoops in on Bono, it creates ...

U2 discography U2 burst onto the scene at the onset of the '80s with a majestic, uplifting, earnest approach and a unique textural sound that endeared them to fans and critics alike. They spent the rest of the decade growing up in public, solidifying their status as post-punk icons, marrying the good intentions of old-school alternative rock with the epic sonic scale of classic '70s rockers, never sounding less than totally original and never pausing for a hits compilation--until 1998. BEST OF offers a good representation of the complex body of work that made the band a legend. Fittingly, the album begins with the debut's "I Will Follow," a statement of commitment to pursuing truth and spirituality despite continual and inevitable misgivings. "Desire" mates Bono's lyrical fervor with a modified Bo Diddley beat to fine effect. New world meets old on the bluesy B.B. King collaboration "When Love Comes to Town." U2 songs The decade of the 1990's was an era of transition for the legendary quartet from Dublin known to the world as U2. An earlier (and more serious) body of work gave way to albums such as POP and ZOOROPA, which radiated the band's positivity and energy in a more lighthearted fashion. THE BEST OF 1990-2000 culls the benchmark tracks from the band's studio albums ("One," "The First Time," "Beautiful Day"), as well as key movie soundtrack cuts ("Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me," "Miss Sarajevo"). While some diehards cooled their passion for the band in the height of their glitz and glamour, experiencing "Stay (Faraway, So Close)" shows the band stripped down to perfection in their most basic and graceful state. THE BEST OF goes even further, luring collectors with new tracks ("Electrical Storm," "The Hands That Built America") as well as new mixes of "Numb" and "Discotheque." Recorded between 1990 & 2000. U2 CD discography With a title inspired by an exhibition of paintings by Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors, THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE confirmed U2 as one of a handful of bands able to tackle such vast and emotive subjects with dignity and musical integrity. There are few artists capable of writing about religion, war, race, politics, and life with such ferocity and global commercial success. 'Pride (In The Name Of Love)', an elegy for Martin Luther King, was a breakout hit, and every track--wrapped in the Edge's impressionistic guitar splashes--reveals a quartet hungry for the world stage. The production by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois was a taste of things to come. Live Recording Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums). "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Seldom has an album title been as appropriate as ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND. Here, U2 returns to its pre-irony '80s glory days with a straightforward rock approach, leaving behind the electronics and intentional mock-decadence of POP and ZOOROPA. It quickly becomes clear however, that the band had to make those albums in order to get to the ego-free state from which this one emerges. While Larry Mullen's driving ...

U2 albums Recorded live during the Joshua Tree Tour in the U.S. and Europe in 1987. Functioning as both the soundtrack to U2's feature film documentary and as a tentative follow-up to their career-making blockbuster, Rattle and Hum is a bit messy. A mix of live cuts and new studio tracks, the album finds U2 running wild in the aftermath of The Joshua Tree, continuing their embrace of America to the point that they adopt several classic rock moves. Specifically, they dabble in American roots rock, something they ignored before. These experiments sometimes work: "Desire" has an intoxicating Bo Diddley beat, "Angel of Harlem" is a punchy, sunny Stax soul tribute, "When Loves Come to Town" is an endearingly awkward blues duet with B.B. King, and the Dylan collaboration "Love Rescue Me" is an overlooked minor bluesy gem. These are paired with some affecting laments -- the cascading "All I Want Is You" and "Heartland," which sounds like a Joshua Tree outtake -- but Rattle and Hum is by ...

U2 music CDs In 1991, U2 shocked the pop-music world with ACHTUNG BABY, a striking departure from the Irish band's beloved '80s arena-rock sound. Here the group careens into sonically adventurous territory, reveling in distorted guitars, drum loops, and layers of synthesizers. The stunning opening track, "Zoo Station," kicks in with fierce, fuzzed-out guitar and a clanging industrial beat, Bono's distinctive voice the only tell-tale sign that this is indeed a U2 album. From here, ACHTUNG BABY deftly maneuvers between giddy electro-pop (the shimmering "Even Better Than the Real Thing," the funky "Mysterious Ways"), bold techno-tinged rock (the majestic punch of "Until the End of the World," the seductive squall of "The Fly"), and contemplative ballads (the heartbreakingly beautiful "One," the haunting closer "Love Is Blindness"). Throughout it all, the quartet plays to the peak of its abilities, aided by the atmospheric, top-notch production of Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. This is the record where Bono, for better or worse, fully embraced the role of "rock star," with the Edge, ...

U2 songs WAR, U2's first gold album, established them as one of the great cutting-edge bands of early '80s rock and the definitive post-punk commercial breakout. From the insularity and ruminative splendor of their studio work, U2 blossomed into a visceral live band capable of turning elegant webs of sound into in-your-face rock and roll. The Edge's innovative guitar work was now augmented by his piano playing (particularly on the hit single "New Year's Day"), while Bono's lyrics turned explicitly to politics for the first time ("Sunday Bloody Sunday"). U2 CD discography By the time of this 1983 live EP, U2 had emerged as the socio-politically conscious, self-determined saviors of rock & roll, their passion, musical power and sheer youthful exuberance making them rock idols to countless young (and some not-so-young) fans. This live document shows the ability of the band (particulary the zealous, proselytic Bono) to fire up a crowd with their earnest, anthemic approach. Early U2 classics like "Gloria," "I Will Follow" and the rabble-rousing terrorism protest "Sunday Bloody Sunday" are neighbored with fun obscurities like "Party GIrl" (complete with endearingly awkward guitar solo) and the moody "The Electric Co." As a final gesture of solidarity with his audience/congregation, rock & roll preacher Bono engages them in a spiritually tinged singalong on "40." Recorded live in Denver, Boston and West Germany on the 1983 "War" tour. U2: The Edge (vocals, guitar, piano); Bono (vocals); Adam Clayton (bass); Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums).

U2 music CDs After spending the 1990s experimenting with electronic music and returning to arena-ready rock during the first few years of the 21st century, U2 stakes out territory somewhere between those two points on 2009's NO LINE ON THE HORIZON. Enlisting its go-to production trio of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite, the Irish quartet seems intent on crafting a quirkier companion piece to HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, and they succeed with restless tracks such as "Get on Your Boots," which sounds like "Vertigo" hijacked by T. U2 songs By the time 2006's U218 SINGLES was released, U2 had been one of rock's reigning behemoths for a good quarter century. Whittling down the group's hefty discography to 18 tracks seems impossible, but U218 SINGLES solves the problem by focusing, as the title suggests, on singles. Consequently, some crucial tunes, namely early ones like "I Will Follow," "Gloria," and "Two Hearts Beat As One," are missing. But since one of U2's greatest strengths is their ability to create imaginative and engaging music that can also cross over into the mainstream, the collection brims with great material. Some of the band's best recorded moments--"Pride (In the Name of Love)," "New Year's Day," and "One," for example--are showcased, along with immediately familiar anthems like "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Mysterious Ways," and "Sweetest Thing." A handful of tunes from the 2000s--like "The Saints Are Coming," the band's famed collaboration with Green Day--round out the set. Most of these songs have already become a permanent part of the pop-culture fabric, but that doesn't lessen the appeal of hearing them on this smartly compiled set. Audio Mixers: Daniel Lanois ; Flood; The Edge; Carl Glanville; Steve Lillywhite; Chris Lord-Alge; Greg Collins ; Nellee Hooper; Andrew Scheps; Rob Jacobs; Shelly Yakus; Simon Gogerly; Simon Osborne; Stephen Harris; Tim Palmer. U2 CD discography From the outset, U2 went for the big message -- every song on their debut album Boy sounds huge, with oceans of processed guitars cascading around Bono's impassioned wail. It was an inspired combination of large, stadium-rock beats and post-punk textures. Without the Edge's echoed, ringing guitar, U2 would have sounded like a traditional hard rock band, since the rhythm section and Bono treat each song as an anthem. Of course, that's the charm of Boy: all of its emotions are on the surface, delivered with optimistic, youthful self-belief, yet the unusual, distinctive guitar textures give it an unexpected tension that makes it an exhilarating debut. The songs may occasionally show some weakness -- the driving "I Will Follow," the dark "An Cat Dubh," and the shimmering "The Ocean" stand out among the sonic textures -- yet the band's musical and lyrical vision keep Boy compelling until the finish. [Island's 2008 reissue included an untitled bonus track.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine "An Cat Dubh" and "Into The Heart" are listed as one song. Recorded at Windmill Lane, Dublin, Ireland. U2: Bono (vocals); The Edge (guitar, background vocals); Adam Clayton (bass guitar); Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums). Audio Mixers: Paul S. Thomas; Martin Hannett. Audio Remasterers: The Edge; Arnie Acosta. Audio Remixer: Robbie McGrath. Liner Note Author: Paul Morley. U2 songs With a title inspired by an exhibition of paintings by Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors, THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE confirmed U2 as one of a handful of bands able to tackle such vast and emotive subjects with dignity and musical integrity. (drums). Recorded at Slane Castle, County Meath and Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland. Personnel: The Edge (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Brian Eno (vocals, keyboards); Daniel Lanois , Bono (vocals); Paul Barrett (keyboards); Clayton (bass guitar); Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums). U2 albums "Beautiful Day" won the 2001 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, for Song Of The Year and for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Walk On" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Record Of The Year. "Elevation" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. While Larry Mullen's driving beat, Adam Clayton's insistently throbbing bass, the Edge's chiming guitar, and Bono's soulful vocals mesh as in the days of yore, there's a less messianic feel to the proceedings that must have resulted from the group's ego-deflating '90s endeavors. While POP and ZOOROPA were the sound of four guys having fun, on this album U2 manages to combine unpretentious joy with the open-hearted rock power of its early recordings. From the spiritual warmth of "Grace" to the soul leanings of "In a Little While," the band regains the organic quality that had been missing from its music of the previous decade. What sounds like an unusually hands-off approach on the part of producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois can only mean that they were smart enough not to fix what was clearly not broken. Exclusive import edition of their record includes one bonustrack, 'The Ground Beneath Her Feet' taken from the MillionDollar Hotel soundtrack that was released earlier this year. This import also comes in a limited, numbered slipcase to the initial pressing only! Australian version with one bonus track.

U2 discography Much in the manner of their previous album, ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND, U2 largely strips down the stadium-sized approach of years past on the provocatively titled HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB. Whether they were inspired by the garage-rock revival that took place in between the two records, or just felt like making some visceral rock & roll, this 2004 release has as much unbridled energy as such early U2 benchmarks as BOY or WAR. The album starts with a bang, courtesy of the charging, angular "Vertigo," whose driving bass line and shouted vocals announce the band's intentions in no uncertain terms. The bluesy "Love and Peace or Else," and the fuzz-guitar-fueled "All Because of You" follow suit in a similarly high-energy manner. That's not to say that this is a mere rockfest from start to finish, though. There are an equal number of reflective, mid-tempo tunes whose direct emotional impact recalls the more elegiac tracks on OCTOBER, giving the whole album a dynamic depth of field. Whether rocking like madmen or getting in touch with their inner selves, though, the band sounds totally committed throughout ATOMIC BOMB, which has always been the first requirement for a great U2 album. Audio Mixers: Chris Lillywhite; Flood; Greg Collins ; Nellee Hooper; Simon Gogerly; Simon Osborne; Carl Glanville. Recording information: HQ; South Of France. Photographers: Joe Edwards; Anton Corbijn. U2: The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen, Jr., Bono . U2 CD discography Though it's probably one of their least-acclaimed albums, OCTOBER is where it all began to come together for U2. The youthful exuberance they demonstrated on BOY was now a given, but for this, their second album, the conceptual end of things began to coalesce as well. The Edge had begun to expand his sonic palette, and the effects-heavy guitar approach that he would rely on for the next several years came to full fruition here. There's further development of the bold, anthemic approach that would come to characterize the band's arrangements, and the songwriting is just plain better. Most affecting, and indicative of the group's progress is the emotional epic "Gloria;" full of resounding major chords and throbbing rhythms, it's simultaneously an open admission of self-doubt and a call to arms to embrace life's uncertainties. This contrast is what makes OCTOBER, along with much of U2's early work, so effective. Recorded at Windmill Lane, Dublin, Ireland in July and August 1981. Originally released on Island (90092). U2 albums Like much pop music in the mid-1990s, POP is cobbled together out of buzzy synthesizers and reverberant keyboards, techno drum loops and funky live drums, guitars distorted into clouds of metal, vocals you sometimes have to work to hear, and songs that seek God and sex and other important stuff in the world's trash heaps. And it's obsessed, more than anything else, with pop itself. At its most frisky, as on the dance-club single "Discotheque," POP sounds like Oasis backed by the Chemical Brothers (see that combo's recent single "Setting Sun" for comparison). Drop the club beat and add a bright acoustic guitar, as on "Staring At The Sun," and POP sounds like, well, Oasis. This is the kind of future-pop U2 introduced on its watershed 1991 album ACHTUNG, BABY, and POP completes a sort of trilogy. Whereas 1993's ZOOROPA played up the "art" side of this experiment, POP, which finds art-rock influence Brian Eno gone from the producer's seat and techno wiz kid Howie B. taking up some of his space, plays up the pop side. It's the most playful album U2 has ever made, with grooves made for dancing, not thinking, and melodies that explode in your face like bubblegum. Lyrically, U2 is still looking for what it hasn't found, in such places as nouveau-riche "Miami" and the celebrity trash receptacle that is "The Playboy Mansion." Musically, though, U2 seems to have found it, in the simple, ecstatic click of a dance beat. POP was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Rock Album. Recorded at South Beach Studios, Miami, Florida; Hanover, Windmill Lane Recording Studios and The Works, Dublin, Ireland. Engineers: Mark "Spike" Stent, Howie B., Alan Moulder. U2 music CDs Since becoming wildly popular in the 1980s, Irish band U2's sound has grown from a raw, soulful rock to a more electronica-tinged, experimental brand of pop. In line with this, U2's stage act has grown into a showcase of lavish special effects, cutting-edge sound, and spectacular multimedia enhancement. POPMART features Bono and the band performing live in Mexico City in support of their 1997 album, POP. Performing 24 old and new tracks, U2 puts on a concert that is a stunning spectacle. Described as a sci-fi disco supermarket, the PopMart tour was all trash & kitsch, including a giant mirrorball lemon, a 100 foot cocktail stick - complete with olive, and the works of Lichtenstein, Warhol, and Haring, to a live rock audience. Filmed at the Foro Sol Autodrome in Mexico City on December 3, 1997, this DVD was directed by David Mallet. Audio and video was digitally remastered with a brand new 5.1 surround mix in DTS and Dolby Digital. This deluxe edition 9 previously unreleased live audio & video tracks, 4 documentaries, tour visuals montage, and DVD-ROM extras.

U2 Biography

Artist's Bono was one of the few real rock heroes of the 1980s, leading the Irish band to international recognition with a charged, political approach to music. The band's early efforts brought a stadium-size presence to post-punk, with Bono's expressive vocals and the Edge's distinct guitar lines interacting seamlessly with the rhythm section of bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. In 1987, Artist broke through to superstardom with THE JOSHUA TREE, a grand culmination of their '80s sound. In the 1990s, however, the band very purposefully deflated that epic image, simultaneously adding ambient, dance, and electronica touches on 1991's ACHTUNG BABY. Mining that vein for much of the decade, Artist kicked off the 21st century with a triumphant return to form that was embraced by new and longtime fans alike.
