Distractions on the Way to The King's Party CD (1994)
Virgil Moorefield songs Contemporary fusion needn't be defined by the soda-pop Spyro Gyra variety. Just ask Virgil Moorefield. Fusion in this case means an engrossing synthesis of such disparate styles as gamelan, progressive rock, bebop, Euro-classical, and snazzy urbanomics. The opening "No Warning" trades saxes and drums for a hot Magma/Crimson workout, while "Seelisberg" makes use of a typical early-'80s Fripp guitar vocabulary, awash in a sea of smartly-executed postbop. Reference points might be Sadhappy's similar brand of dense jazz-funk, Lost Tribe's pavement pounders, or even Tribal Tech's punches to the gut. But Moorefield's disc really stands apart, built with the metal of rock and cast in a setting of jazz.

Glenn Branca: Symphony Nos. 8 & 10 "The Mysteries" CD (1994)
Virgil Moorefield albums Subtitled "The Mystery" and "The Mystery Pt. 2," these two symphonies concern themselves with the two big questions: Life and Death. They are both scored for eight guitars, two basses, keyboard, drums, vocal and two conductors. Symphony No. 8 has two movements: "The Passion" and "Spiritual Anarchy" that both build upon sustained tones that create a counterpoint by means of delays in scale and other patterns and microtunings. The effect is tremendously intense and beautiful. There are also two ...
