Waylon Jennings music CDs Just prior to his death in 2002, Waylon Jennings headed over with some regularity to the home studio of his longtime friend and producer Robby Turner. Featuring nothing more than Waylon's own guitar and Turner's bass, these recordings were spare and simple, intended to be finished out some day down the road. That day arrived a decade later, when Turner finally felt ready to flesh out these recordings with the assistance of several regular Jennings sidemen, adding rhythm, steel, guitars, keyboards, and some harmony vocals to the original demos, releasing the finished product as the Goin' Down Rockin' album. Often, this kind of posthumous overdubbing winds up sounding a bit mawkish, but not here. ...

Waylon Jennings songs This 2012 budget-line disc rounds up duets from Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, primarily relying on hits they had during the outlaw gold rush of the '70s -- including a couple cuts that are nominally by either Waylon or Willie alone -- but extending all the way to 1991 so it can include a few cuts by the Highwaymen. It's a touch uneven but it has plenty of good songs -- including "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)," "Good Hearted Woman," "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," "I Can Get Off on You," and "Just to Satisfy You" -- which is enough to make it worth its price. ...

Waylon Jennings discography This is the quintessential "Outlaw country" album. Waylon Jennings spent the early '70s working his way up to this rough-and-tumble masterpiece, arguably the finest album of his prolific career. Jennings was so taken with the songwriting of Nashville rowdy Billy Joe Shaver that he decided to record this all-Shaver album (with the exception of the Fritts/Seals-penned "You Asked Me To"), which helped put Shaver on the map as the poet laureate of the Outlaw set. Jennings eschewed the lush countrypolitan sound in favor of a raw, electrified approach that owed more to the Rolling Stones than to Billy Sherrill. With a small band and simple arrangements, he introduced contemporary rock-oriented beats into his hard-hitting country ...

Waylon Jennings songs Digitally remastered by Elliott Federman (SAJE Sound, New York, New York). THIS TIME is part of Buddha Records' Original Masters series. Buddha Records is to be commended for resurrecting many of Waylon's finest, long out-of-print '70s albums, with extra tracks to boot. THIS TIME is marked by Jenning's classic mid-'70s "outlaw country" sound; bare-bones production and raw, rock-inflected musicianship. The title song is a forceful statement of intent, while "Louisiana Women" features a slinky, uncharacteristically understated vocal performance. THIS TIME is the immediate successor to Jennings' genre-defining finest hour, HONKY TONK HEROES, an album full of Billy Joe Shaver songs, and Shaver's work pops up here as well. His bluesy, churning "Slow Rollin' Low" is a classic ...

Waylon Jennings CD discography Contains previously released material Waylon Jennings recorded for RCA between 1965 and 1985. Prior to 1993's double-disc box set Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line: The RCA Years, there was no comprehensive collection of Waylon Jennings' seminal RCA recordings, only three LP collections, each targeting specific eras in his career: 1970's The Best of Waylon Jennings covered his '60s material, including his country-folk hits; 1979's Greatest Hits zeroed in on his outlaw peak; and its 1985 sequel concentrated on the post-outlaw hangover. All had their attributes, especially the expertly assembled Greatest Hits, but none captured the full scope of his music, particularly because much of his great music never hit the charts. Waylon Jennings songs The 2004 collection ULTIMATE WAYLON JENNINGS has a lot in common with the 1996 ESSENTIAL WAYLON JENNINGS. Both are single-disc, career-spanning RCA anthologies that contain most of the late country legend's biggest hits. Waylon Jennings songs Ol' Waylon was released when Waylon Jennings had become a superstar. Outlaw was still popular, perhaps at its peak, but it was no longer the movement that it had been just a few short years before. As if offering proof, Waylon cut his most formulaic album since the early '60s, a record that satisfied the demands of outlaw without ever stretching them. Since this was recorded at a near-peak of not only his popularity but his power, there are some great moments on Ol' Waylon, particularly on the lead single "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)," a wonderful reminiscence of times back, "If You See Me Getting Smaller," and "I Think I'm ...

Waylon Jennings albums After bottoming out in a haze of drugs and bad decisions, Outlaw Country pioneer Waylon Jennings left his longtime label RCA for MCA Records, turning out four albums during his mid-1980s tenure there. Those albums are included in their entirety on this double-disc collection, which documents the period where Waylon began to relocate himself both personally and musically. His full-fledged artistic reawakening didn't really kick in until the '90s, but there are still many signs of life to be found here. Though Jimmy Bowen's very '80s-sounding production gives the tracks a bit of an impersonal feel, there's no dampening a spirit like Waylon's, and the singer's country soul comes through loud and clear on wisely chosen covers (Los Lobos' "Will the Wolf Survive?," Steve Earle's "The Devil's Right Hand") and trenchant new material (the powerfully heartbreaking "Crying Don't Even Come Close" stands out mightily). Granted, there are a few curious moments--it's hard to figure why Waylon chose to cover the '70s pop hits "Baker Street" and "Chevy Van"--but they don't sink the ship. To hear Waylon tearing into the bluesy Rodney Crowell co-write "Woman I Hate It" or deftly navigating Jesse Winchester's metaphysical ballad "Defying Gravity (Executioner's Song)" is to be reminded of the gifts that made Jennings a country star in the first place. All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology. Personnel: Waylon Jennings (vocals, guitar); John Anderson, Johnny Cash (vocals).
Never Say Die: The Final Concert Film Never Say Die: The Final Concert Film CDs (2007) 4 stars
CD $28.39 Buy It  Details With DVD
Waylon Jennings music CDs Talk about not going gently into that good night. Waylon chooses the ultimate perch of conservative Nashville--the Ryman Auditorium--for the live swan song to his career as country's definitive outlaw. Despite his age and failing health, his booming baritone of a voice is in exceptional form here, and carries this riveting live document. Originally a rock-&-roll drummer, Jennings's proclivities were always to push country as far into rock-&-roll territory as possible, and here--with Elvis covers, an 11-piece band with horn section, and a bad attitude--he does just that. The two-disc set includes the entire two-hour concert and features special guests such as Travis Tritt and Jennings's longtime companion, Jessi Colter, who duets with him on a killer version of "Suspicious Minds." Other highlights are a plaintive "Help Me Make It Through the Night," and the thematic pieces "Never Say Die" and "Goin' Down Rockin'." Despite the lighter fare, such as the pop misfire "Never Been to Spain," Jennings makes the most of his final show by going out rocking, and for a man who legendarily played every show like it was his last, it is a fitting conclusion. This DVD/2CD set includes the very last concert that Waylon ever filmed (at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium) in 2002. With his health failing, he performed backed by the all-star Waymore Blues Band. Joined by wife Jessi Colter and guests John Anderson, Travis Tritt, and Montgomery Gentry, he delivered a moving, exhilarating performance revisiting some of his greatest songs. Extras include exclusive 30 minute featurette with never-before-seen rehearsal footage and interviews conducted in 2000 with Waylon, Jessi, Bobby Bare, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Chet Atkins, Richie Abright, and many more. Waylon Jennings: Waylon Jennings (electric guitar); Carter Robertson (vocals); Reggie Young (guitar); Robby Turner, Rance Wasson (acoustic guitar); Jenny Lynn (cello); Jim Horn (alto saxophone); Steve Herman (trumpet); Charles Robertson (trombone); Barny Robertson (keyboards); Jerry Bridges (bass guitar); Ritchie Albright (drums). (Note: A DVD featuring behind-the-scenes rehearsals and interviews with heavyweights Kris Kristofferson, Bobby Bare, and Willie Nelson is also included.) Additional personnel: Jessi Colter (piano); John Anderson, Montgomery Gentry, Travis Tritt.

While the reason may be simply a new package in order to clear shelves of excess inventory, this exercise also serves a purpose for collectors and fans filling in holes for a favorite artist. These three recordings by Waylon Jennings are all stone killers, beginning with 1973's Lonesome, On'ry and Mean. This was the first record where Jennings got his way and was able to pick out the songs he wanted to record as well as use his own touring band in the studio -- a huge victory for the era. The set contains Steve Young's title cut, which has become one of the signature tunes -- if not the signature tune -- for the entire outlaw movement in country music history; it's a genuine anthem. This alone would make the album worth the purchase price but there's so much more: great readings of Mickey Newbury's "San Francisco Mabel Joy," Danny O'Keefe's "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues," and Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee"; there isn't a dull moment on the album, widely regarded as Waylon's masterpiece. Also here is 1977's Ol' Waylon, which contains the original version of his "Luckenbach Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)," an amazing reading of Rodney Crowell's "Till I Gain Control Again," and the ballad "If You See Me Getting Smaller." Released in 1978, I've Always Been Crazy was spottily reviewed by the national music press at the time -- perhaps because even country stalwarts like Mel Tillis were claiming they were outlaws and the whole thing turned into a Nashville marketing circus. Jennings' frustration is evidenced by the smoking track "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Outta Hand." That said, the album has aged exceedingly well. In addition to the aforementioned cut, it has the rollicking title track, a solid Buddy Holly medley (Jennings was a member of the Crickets), the beautiful midtempo ballad "A Long Time Ago," and fine versions of Merle Haggard's "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down" and Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line." Given the super budget price tag, and the fact that these are all remastered editions, this is essential listening for anyone even remotely interested in Jennings or even fans who haven't replaced their copies of the original CDs with better-sounding ones. ~ Thom Jurek

Waylon Jennings music CDs In 1977, Waylon Jennings was still at the peak of the popularity brought about via the Outlaw Country movement he helped create a few years earlier. ARE YOU READY FOR THE COUNTRY finds him retaining vestiges of that rough-and-ready sound, but simultaneously gravitating towards a more personal, introspective style. Backed by stalwarts Richie Albright (drums) and Ralph Mooney (pedal steel), he was still capable of the gritty country/rock amalgam that made him famous, as on the blistering title track, a HARVEST-era Neil Young tune. At the same time, "A Couple More Years" (penned by Shel Silverstein and Dr. Hook's Dennis Locorriere) and a cover of the Marshall Tucker Band hit "Can't You See" traffic in an intimate wistfulness that points towards the fuller emotional landscape Jennings would travel in the future.

Waylon Jennings albums Two aging outlaws swap reminisces and argue good-naturedly about who's caused the most trouble. Every once in a while they work themselves up to doing more damage. Small flashes of tossed-off brilliance appear in nearly every song, but sometimes it's hard to tell what's part of the pair's casual charm and what's just laziness: when the clever "Old Age and Treachery" (always overcome youth and skill) falls apart at the end, it's infuriating. Like much of either singer's output, Clean Shirt sounds a bit wrinkled at first, but most of the album holds up to repeated listening. ~ Brian Mansfield Recorded at the Bennett House, Franklin, Tennessee. Waylon Jennings Biography

Texan country singer Artist was always a bit of a rocker. Early on, he played bass with Buddy Holly, and his first solo records included Beatles covers, highly unusual for a country artist at the time. Jennings was one of the key figures of the outlaw country movement of the 1970s, rejecting the lush countrypolitan sound in favor of a raw, electrified approach that owed more to the Rolling Stones than to Billy Sherrill. With a small band and simple arrangements, Jennings introduced contemporary rock-oriented grooves into his hard-hitting country sound, adding some funky grit to common-man poetics on tunes about the tougher side of life. He inspired a subsequent generation of country iconoclasts, and spurred on contemporaries like Willie Nelson and Tompall Glaser.
