Favoring either subtle beats or a metronomic pulse as the backdrop for his ethereal compositions, Schnauss builds up a wistful, starkly beautiful soundscape daubed in washes of hazy reverb effects. On his third album, GOODBYE, Schnauss reimagines the shimmering, melodic textures of dreampop as blissed-out synthetic symphonies. If the guitar-based shoegaze sound of '90s indie acts like Chapterhouse and Slowdive had their electronic equivalent, it might as well be Germany's Ulrich Schnauss. Yes, Enya, but maybe only if she were to be produced by Kevin Shields. Adding subtle layer upon subtle layer to achieve a sonic cohesiveness, GOODBYE is imbued with a warmth and emotional resonance that's rarely found in electronic music. On Ulrich Schnauss' third album Goodbye, he gently fades away from Boards of Canada style breakbeats and deep into a shoegaze slumber that drifts gently into an ethereal realm slightly reminiscent of Enigma, Ultravox, and at its most lush moments, Enya. Personnel: Ulrich Schnauss (piano, synthesizer, sampler); Ulrich Schnauss; Aidan Banks, Matt Dabbs (vocals); Doug March, Doug March, Rob McVey (guitar); Judith Beck (guitar). Breathy keyboard pads are at the forefront and this results in a more sleepy retro vibe derivative of '80s new age, which might be the trouble with this record.
