| | Ashes Smashed CD (2003)
$11.39 Smashed! is filled with oodles of hooks, harmonies, and repeated choruses that won't leave your head no matter how hard you try to get rid of them, along with a dollop of pub leanings that give the sound an edgy, British flavor. is as infectious as a child with the measles, and Kelly's vibrato-flecked lead vocals make the album wholly unique. Fans of the bright power pop stylings of Ed James and the thicker sound of Cast will especially love "Broken Heart Token," "Wh-Where Were You?," "Jones!," "In One Ear," and the pulsating "New Toy." The melancholic "Unborn" as well as the sustained keyboards and yearning chorus of "Thunderboots" are particularly emotive and powerful. Every cut on Smashed! was originally released in a very limited run in 1994, but fortunately Warmfuzz Records head and the album's producer, the venerable Ian Shaw, had the good taste to re-release it on his label. Wingate, who specialized in power pop done the old fashioned way; Smashed! The Asheswere the UK duo of Bob Kelly and Trev R.

| Ashes Ashes CD (1968) (Import) United Kingdom
$18.39 The rare and sole album by the Ashes is worth seeking by folk-rock aficionados, though it's not truly essential, and not worth the high prices it commands on the collector market. They also don't sound like they're trying quite so hard to be far-out and beatific, and for that reason they might be more appealing to some listeners than the Peanut Butter Conspiracy are. The Ashes, though, have a more pronounced country-rock touch at times than the Peanut Butter Conspiracy do. Like the Peanut Butter Conspiracy, there are bits of Los Angeles folk-rock giants like the Byrds and the Mamas & the Papas floating around that don't coalesce into anything as recognizable or significant as the Byrds or the Mamas & the Papas. It's low-key circa-1967-1968 folk-rock, highlighted by Pat Taylor's assured, stirring vocals.
