The closest comparison is probably Sleater-Kinney, but the Bangs have a more visceral, aggressive sound that at times -- especially on the twin anthems "Burnout," and "Death by Guitar" -- recalls the metal-tinged punky pop of late-'80s Redd Kross and Pandoras records. A female-led indie-punk trio from Olympia -- who perhaps not coincidentally have the exact same name a certain Los Angeles girl group from the early '80s used until they decided to lengthen it to the Bangles -- the Bangs are less noisy than Bratmobile and more rocking than Beat Happening, to compare them to their scene compadres (or less sweet than Cub and less subversively poppy than the Muffs, to expand the comparisons). The songs, which have the urgency and bite-me attitude of the Olympia scene, deserve better than that. The album's main flaw is Scott Swayze's ultra-muddy production, which, on songs like the bizarrely-titled "Lend Me Crumpets" moves well beyond lo-fi D.I.Y. into willful amateurishness.

Not quite riot grrrl, not quite girl group, the Bangs are sure of one thing -- they're ready to rock. While the Donnas sing about "hotboxin'" in the back of their parents' van, the Bangs are planning their "Sweet Revenge." The Donnas want boys, while the Bangs want respect from them. The Bangs, featuring former members of Witchypoo and the Slatterlines, sound like a grown-up version of the Donnas, spitting their girl punk fury with deadly accuracy.

Here we have a post-riot grrrl act who doesn't really come close to encompassing the personal politics, outrage, and punk rock spirit that once made the music of Bikini Kill and Team Dresch vital. The Bangs -- an Olympia, WA, trio -- have a bit of a feminist, riot grrrl vibe to their lyrics (complaints about male harassers) and on some of their tunes they pound out a torrent of screechy punk rock like
