| | Transaction De Novo CD (1998)
$12.25 Indie rock producer Steve Albini gives the band space to create its own sound; it combines percussion and odd time signatures with its well-known tiered guitar compositions. Bedhead hasn't forgotten, in its maturity, how to stay unpredictable. Melody reigns, allowing multi-layered guitar intricacies to shine through.
"Extramundane," is anything but, a surprisingly uptempo number that gives a nod to pop and jolts the listener into an Unrest-type track sung by an uncharacteristically tuneful Matt Kadane. With the laboring bass and minimal drums of the final track, "The Present," the band harks back to its beginnings. The last and final album from these kings of shoegazing rock comes full circle.
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois in 1997.
Recording information: Chicago, IL (05/02/1997-05/09/1997).
Unknown Contributor Role: Steve Albini.
Bedhead includes: M. The remainder of the recording, however, hews to its country-like beginnings, with songs such as "Forgetting," complete with guitar twang and muttered vocals. The vocals, stronger than ever, are no longer buried amidst the whirlwind of three guitars, but reside in spacious moments. Following the quiet gentility of the first lo-fi FOUR SONG EP and the layered experimentation of WHAT FUN LIFE WAS and BEHEADED, TRANSACTION DE NOVO is a mellower Bedhead record. | What Fun Life Was CD (1994) Reissue
$11.39 Abandoning low-key guitars and country pinings, Bedhead opts for thick sonic layers and dynamic time changes, creating a delightfully cacophonous and melodic structure. Bedhead's first full length album, WHAT FUN LIFE WAS displays for the first time the influential songwriting and noise pop leanings that inspired a loyal following. The vocals still underpin the melody, but now, as on tracks such as "Haywire," they signal sudden, wonderfully timed crescendos.
"Bedside Table" is the best example of the band's departure from the first FOUR SONG EP.
