Though Blue Merle originally had a tangential connection to the poppier end of the US jam-band scene, the group's debut, BURNING IN THE SUN, reveals a combo much more closely allied with the moody British sounds of the Coldplay/Travis axis. On "Stay," lead vocalist Luke Reynolds summons the spirit of Jeff Buckley, soaring into falsetto over a jazzy mix of acoustic guitars and cellos that is part Jason Mraz, part Joni Mitchell. The title track employs a fleet-fingered mandolin pattern in the same way other acts might use a synth loop. Interestingly, Blue Merle forges the style's dreamy epics using primarily acoustic instrumentation that often makes the group sound like an unlikely combination of the Dave Matthews Band and Echo & the Bunnymen.

Perhaps the most affecting song is the collection's closing track, a beautiful instrumental rendition of "In the Sweet By and By" by dobro master Jerry Douglas and whistle player Ciaran Tourish that manages to embody the project's thoughtful spirit The general mood here is mellow yet hopeful, with contributions by a wide range of artists, including John Prine, Jackson Browne, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Blue Merle, Cerys Matthews, and Jim Lauderdale. Many of the tracks carry a Celtic feel, including Tim O'Brien and Lunasa's gentle "Fair and Tender Ladies" and Altan's "Let's Heal," which features Vince Gill. Released almost a year after the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia, 2005's HANDS ACROSS THE WATER is a benefit album for the young, often orphaned survivors of that tragic event.
