Valens was only 17 years old at the time, standing at the very beginning of his musical career, full of promise and unrealized potential. Ritchie Valens's death in the same 1959 airplane crash that claimed Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper remains one of the greatest tragedies of early rock & roll. His simple, heartfelt music made the teenager America's first Latin rock star, inspired a Hollywood film, and earned him a posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Nevertheless, Ritchie's voice and guitar playing carries them through.
