This is what the Delta blues probably sound like in the head of engineer Steve Albini, and Todd Trainer -- who wrote and performs everything himself on Whatchamacallit -- is the perfect guy to bring it to fruition. The long-overdue disc is a brooding and intimidatingly minimalist affair that mostly revolves around Trainer's deep, spoken moan, not unlike Caspar Brötzmann Massaker without the artifice. Scary sh*t, but like all such foreboding things, an acquired taste.

Recalling Crime & the City Solution, Codeine, and even slow rock practitioners Low in some parts, Trainer's voice delivers some spine-chilling tales in a deep baritone rasp over a minimal backdrop dominated by simple but highly effective fuzz guitar that seems ever teetering on the edge of feedback. This is a dirge-like collection of bleak and spare songs from Shellac drummer Todd Trainer, who on guitar and vocals delivers a sinister and edgy brand of drone rock.
