More Specific, Less Pacific CD (2002)

"Enter Fluorescence" captures the feeling of a stripped-down, pre-Daydream Nation Sonic Youth and "Trap Door" grinds like something off of Dirty. Less experimental than post-rockers like Ativin and less math rock than 31Knots, Artist is content to destroy with pure heaviness and early Fugazi assaults. The debut full-length from Artist, a San Francisco trio, filters a classic Unwound wall of sound through the dissonant guitars and attack rhythms of Gang of Four. The production may be a bit muddy, but Artist has a firm grasp on riveting art punk songwriting. Artist has real potential -- they just need to find a producer who can help them realize their sound.

Their song writing has been influenced by Explosions In The Sky, The Appleseed Cast, At The Drive In, and Minus The Bear, but their songs could hardly be called emo or post rock. Artist are four young guys from Winchester that cite the inspiration for writing their debut EP as personal loss, friendships, the band, being hospitalized and love.
