 Manu Chao Biography
Barcelona-born political firebrand Artist has been a powerful personage in the world music scene since the advent of his Clash-inspired 1980s band Mano Negra. The band, who synthesized multiple stylistic influences like reggae, punk, and rap, had a devoted following in Latin America. That loyalty bled over to Chao's next project, the similarly multicultural Radio Bemba Sound System, a more sprawling outfit that also toured the globe and had hits in the '90s with such infectious, rai-flavored songs as "Me Gustas Tu." Chao began recording and performing as a solo artist at the turn of the millennium. His 2007 album, LA RADIOLINA, a dense and multilingual tour de force, was adored by critics and fans, and was the first of his recordings to be embraced by U.S. audiences.
