found the ensemble still working as a tight, sympathetic unit and delivering the goods in their funk-inflected, retro-themed fashion (many of the tunes sound like they could fit easily on a '70s Blaxploitation soundtrack).
Group founder DJ Greyboy rejoins the band as co-producer, marking his first collaboration with the Allstars since their 1995 debut, WEST COAST BOOGALOO. The group's first studio outing in a decade, 2007's WHAT HAPPENED TO TELEVISION? The group's various members, including multi-instrumentalist and jam band circuit regular Karl Denson, are top-drawer musicians, and it's clear that their long hiatus from each other has more to do with busy schedules than with any lack of creative chemistry. The Greyboy AllStars specialize in groove-oriented instrumental jams that fall somewhere between jazz and club music.

There's enough angularity in the arrangements to bear occasional comparison to Medeski, Martin & Wood. The band includes alumni from Black Eyed Peas, T.J. Kirk, and Walter's own Greyboy Allstars, which means that the playing is consistently top-notch. Robert Walter continues to balance on twin peaks of dance and jazz cultures with Giving Up the Ghost, whose breezy grooves cool sizzling keyboard and sax lines down to a simmer.
